Its been very dry these past few weeks in the South East . The promised rain didn't come yesterday and Im worried it is a drought.
We've had to water the garden a few times with a hose pipe.

We've got weird weather. We live by the east coast and we get a bank of mist called a haar. It can go from being really warm and sunny, to very cold and damp within period of about ten minutes - a drop in temperature of about 8⁰C.

And vice versa of course!

Right now it's getting sunny, 13⁰C

It's gorgeous here on the south coast, but we've had hardly any rain for ages. I'm trying to cut right back on plants that need watering, so a lot less container plants. We have water butts but they're pretty much empty now.

This is likely to become even more of a problem in the coming years, which is important to bear in mind when choosing plants.

I've never heard of a haar! That would drive me nuts. :D
We only have a small garden . We have honeysuckle and buddleia for the bees. We have a cobnut tree and the squirrel berries the nuts around the garden so we have baby cobnut trees growing and we plant them in our local fields and parks.

I think the weather is waiting until we go away in June and then it will pour down with rain for a week. 🤣

We live not far from the coast , went to port solent for lunch it was 27 ...🥵

Freezing cold today Any one wearing thermals ? Asking for a friend. 😆

Whereabouts are you, Dibby? It's still lovely and warm down here on the South Coast and set to continue. I'd still like some rain though, preferably at night.

Really hot here (Devon), too hot for me really. Been like this for a few weeks now, we had one day a week or so ago where we had some showers, but that's it.

In West London , not far from the M25.

Currently on the Roseland Peninsula - amazing weather but very much aware of the farmers’ situation re drought. Yes, a deluge during the night would be appreciated.

I feel sorry for the farmers. last year it rained too much and flooded the land when they planted the crops and now its too dry and a dust bowl and the crops are growing .
I fear this will put up the prices for bread etc.

Here in Norfolk we haven't had any significant rain for 6 weeks & while most people are delighted I'm genuinely concerned- I've had to water daily as I have numerous saplings & loads of young plants I've grown from seed, the local farmers are having to irrigate their crops & I've got several bowls of water scattered around for the poor wildlife.

My neighbour was talking about the drought of 1976 the other day, I don't remember it as I was only a baby but it was apparently really bad

According to the BBC , its going to rain in the South , this weekend. Of course it is , it's the Bank Holiday !

I remember the drought of 1976. It went on for weeks and weeks and it was very hot too.

Yes, it was bad. I remember it well as we were buying our first home. The Downs in Bristol were like coconut matting. You could run your fingers through the vegetation and leave four black lines. However, when it rained it was with a vengeance and in no time green was everywhere and the fragrance of petrichor was everywhere. Things WILL get better.

As the forecast predicted we've had some rain, no where near enough, but as it's cloudy it'll have a chance to soak in to the soil hopefully.
Fingers crossed for more rain later, a nice steady rain that can really get soaked in would be good.

We've got rain on and off here at the moment. I just about remember the heat of '76, as I was a nipper. I remember the white walls of some buildings down by the seafront being red with ladybirds and I also remember a huge influx of aphids when we were visiting Osbourne House on the IOW that year! Random memories to share! 😁

I was a teenager in 1976, I remember it well. Particularly the ladybirds - every time we came indoors we had to pick them off each other!

It's a 'good' year for aphids, so maybe we'll see a lot of ladybirds this year. I say 'good', because I regard them as food for all the ladybirds, hoverfly larvae, lacewings, parasitic wasps etc. that predate on them. And of course, the more of those in my garden, the more they'll find a balance :)
