Just don't worry about it ... experience is the best teacher, and the more you race the more you learn.

Most clubs have an abundance of old timers (smirks) who can tell you what you need to know ... usually without you even asking :D

If you can get hold of old back issues of Whippet News, they can be quite informative. There is the WCRA's leaflet Getting Started of course, but as you already have done that I'm not certain how much help that will be.

And as you have already discovered - asking a question on here can generate a wealth of information ... some of it useful too!!!!!

Good luck and happy racing :)

BRILLIANT, just love that term.

And yes, I have found many folk who will share information readily. Perhaps the most infomative teachers I have had, are our lovely hosts Nigel and Judy :huggles:

Thanks you two

When Archie was a pup, they played with the lure with him, and have since given me and hubby very practical steps to follow. They have even lent us a Ziggy (not that Ziggy minded, he thought it was birthday and Christmas rolled into one to have another trial  ). We are just beginning, and I am sure you'll get sick to death of me asking dim-wit questions once a fortnight, but in the meantime THANKS

Had to laugh at your last post Jo. - You mean me and Nigel are the biggest smirks :b :D

Some more info for you to chew over - although you might have already heard this -

There is handicaping and then there is handicapping!.

At open racing and a lot of club racing, the dogs are handicapped according to weight. The bigger dogs will give away yardage to the smaller dogs. The handicap can vary but is commonly 1/2 a yard a pound (we're not metricated) over 150 yards or if the race is 175 yards or a 240 yard bend, then it will probably be 1 yard a pound.

Veterans (dogs 6 years old and over) also get a yard a year.

At club racing the handicap can also be according to ability with the faster dogs giving away yardage to the slower dogs. Its the job of the poor old race manager, or the handicapper if it's not the same person, to decide the handicap. Not an easy job.

You're only smirks if it is a nice thing to be!

Thanks for that about the handicap system. I shall have to butter Hannah up when Archie starts for real. I think he will need to be started halfway down the track :p

You've already started buttering Chris up from what I hear........ :- " massages indeed.... (w00t) not sure if Hannah will feel like giving Archie a head start! :teehee:
