Hello I am fairly new to this forum thing but thought this is a good way to get some advice .

I have a gorgeous 18mth whippet called Alfie who gets plenty of attention during the day and walks etc but still has a wee at night 5 nights out of 7 usually by the back door.

He is fully house trained during the day and does not go out all that often and will not wee if he gets left at home for a while, ,

.At first we were leaving paper down at night when he was little but now the paper has gone he still wee's at night in the place where it was.

Am i the only owner who is having this problem , any advice and will i need to resort to a "dog flap"

Thanks Rachel :))

Hi thanks for the qiuck response. He goes out last thing at night usually around 11pm and my hubby gets up at 6am by then we usually have a puddle, he does not usually drink much after his tea as he takes up his place on the sofa in front of the TV for the evening and snores, not sure why it only seems to be at night unless he has a nocturnal habit, as he is fine during the day.I am reluctant to get him a friend at the moment until he is "dry"

Hi and wellcome to K9  Have you thought about using a crate at night? Most dogs are very reluctant to wee in their own beds, particularly adults. At 18 months there should be no problem with Alfie lasting 7 hours through the night, so it's probably just a habit he's got himself into.

Frankie came to me at 4 months and we used a crate at night from the start, we've had no accidents! :luck:

that maybe the thing he could have just got himself into a habit I'm not sure how you would break that but I'm sure someone on here will, maybe if you make him go out more during the evening to change his routine

Also meant to ask are you sure he is having a wee at 11 because if it's cold mine run out and then straight back in I have to watch them to make sure they go :shifty:

Good luck anyway :D

Oh yes got wise to that one i go out and watch him "perform" i guess it's going to be a hard habit to break may have to resort to the dog flap as not quite sure what else to do

If he's doing it by the back door, it suggests he might be wanting to go out. Keep an eagle eye on him and the minute he looks like he might want a pee, ie heading towards the back door, starts circling and sniffing the ground let him out, give lots of praise when he does the right thing outside. Sounds like he is nearly there with it, so goodluck.

I can't see the dog flap would help, if he's used to doing it inside he won't necessarily go outside to do it all by himself; you need to reinforce the 'pee outside = very good' by anticipating it, and praising him when he does the right thing; it's easier than chastising AFTER he's done the wrong thing.

It's a difficult one to break. I have to take mine out for a walk to make sure he empties his bladder fully at 10pm ish. I then let him sleep in our bed so he's warm and doesn't feel the need to get up. I think this broke the habit too, 'cos I closed the bedroom door so he couldn't wander downstairs to the kitchen to his usual spot.

I think the crate is a good suggestion (especially if you don't want him in the bed overnight). I think this habit is worse if they wake up feeling cold at night, so having them snuggled up warm somewhere may help too.

Good luck :luck:

The most important thing to do is not let him have a drink after 6 pm, then last thing before you go to bed take him a walk round the block, not just outside, or he will not empty enough to last the night. He will pee lots to leave his mark for other dogs to sniff as long as you take him round the block.

I found mine is the same. If she is staying away from home she will withold although she may become a boit restless early morning (crossing her legs I think!). I have found that she does not go when 1) she has had a good day's running 2) I don't leave her water bowl at night. 3) She is let out as soon as I get up so as soon as she is awake she is out (If I wait 10 mins before letting her out it is too late and I have to mop up!) and 4) I gave her a night coat to sleep with. All together mean that she sleeps all night without waking up, and as soon as walking up she is outside hence no puddle!

The cruncher was definitely the warm coat at night for her.

Our boys were trained using a crate in the bedroom. It didn`t take long at all to learn to yodel if they wanted a pee.

Once we were confident we forgot the crate.

We are still woken most nights with a poke in the ear, and a request to go out NOW!

I do it on automatic pilot and usually have one myself while the dog goes.

Perhaps us boys can`t last as long as you girls?

Hi Folks. :))

Many thanks for your excellent suggestions, We are going to try putting Alfie to bed tonight in his coat and a new comfy softer bed (just purchased from Pets at home) and give that a go , if that doesn't work tomorrow night i guess we are 3 in a bed. :huggles:

Sorry but i really must disagree with some of what you say.You should never withold water from a dog, they should always have access to water.Keeping the dog unable to drink isn't going to retrain it not to pee indoors.

Crate training or letting whippet snuggle down with you at night without access to the kitchen would both be workable options. :)

Thanks for that, to be honest he hardly goes to his water bowl in the evenings as after 6pm he is asleep on the sofa, in the mornings his water level has hardly moved, i think going around the block may help as he enjoys putting his "pee" on almost every lampost in the area.

So does Gelert, but when you turn and head homewards, only then does he do a proper long one :b They do ration it out quite carefully!

Welcome to K9   and Alfie
