Is there anyone here who give there dogs tinned fish occasionally? I give mine tinned sardines in oil once a week as i believe it contains nutrients and is good for their coat - am i right in this?

My two dogs have had sardines all there life, good for them and many dogs like them.

I find it difficult to find them in oil.

Lidls or aldi maybe,, I get the ones in tomato anyway as enough oil in the fish to do the job.

Hmm, might try this with my dog so I can share as I like sardines too

Is that for you lurcherman or your dog? We've started giving our dog Pilchards in tomato sauce (with most of sauce taken off) as a treat once or twice a week and she loves them (as does our cat!)

The toast n sardines is defo for me lol. Nowt wrong with pilchards either mate.

Sorry about above post - still getting used to posting things! I was in a Sainsburys local earlier this week, and found sardines in olive oil - 55p a tin, probably cheaper in a bigger Sainsburys? My dogs loved them, but i couldn't eat tinned fish in any oil - i agree, much better in tomato sauce on toast for me

Actually, i can't remember if it was pilchards or sardines - only bought one tin and that's in the recycling now!

We mostly feed our dog Orijen dried food with a wet topper but he does love some treats from time to time. Cans of tuna are one of his favourites, I literally cannot open a can without him rushing into the kitchen and virtually mugging me to share some. Usually I buy the one with spring water.

Exactly the same, when I'm being good, or at least goodish, i eat a lot of fish - think I'm getting my new doggie into good habits, not that she had any bad ones, well, not too many lol

Not tinned but just lately our springer spaniels have been going mad for smoked salmon.

most "smoked" salmon is also pretty heavily salted, :x   i only eat it when cut heavily with low-fat cream cheese AKA Neufchatel, which dilutes the saltiness & makes it into a salmon spread. // OTOH i have smoked my own fish, sans added salt, & the dogs, cats, & myself, all enjoyed it.  

I prefer the water-packed fish for myself & any pets [dogs, cats, ferrets, ___ ] who'd love a nice meaty tidbit. Agree with @lurcherman  - the fish themselves have oodles of nice healthy oils, no need to slather them in any more.     They're liable to slide right off the plate, if they get any more lubricated.  :lol:

my Akita got canned jack-mackerel [water-packed, skin, bones, 'n all], & loved it - i read a memoir by a well-known Akita breeder, who recommended both fish & seaweed supplements to provide adequate iodine & good "breed apropos" nutrition, & whether or no it was true, she certainly relished them both...   & was very healthy indeed, until she developed an auto-immune blood disorder [which eventually killed her - she was trashing her own platelets, & while her vet & i kept her stable and happy for 2-years after her initial crisis, there was never any question of a 'cure'].

I'd love to be able to give Molly fish as I know how many beneficial oils etc would be good for her, but sadly one sardine causes projectile diarrhoea for about 36 hours. 

She lives on raw chicken, raw beef, liver jerky and some fruit, with only tiny treats of other stuff.
