I`m heading to my first race meeting in Roscrea, Co.Tipperary with Ernie on Sunday ! I think it`s their 5th meeting this year and when the ground gets too hard they are all ready to go the local schooling track to race !

By all accounts they take it very seriously and had trophies and a couple hundred €`s to the winner at a recent sponsored meeting ! Off to the pub afterwards for tea and sandwiches  and raised €2,500 in the process for a school from local sponsorship !

Will keep you all posted on how things turned out !

nice one chum..give me a bell let me know how he gets on..preferably before the ermmmm..tea :- "

j  hn

That sounds like a great day out! Good luck with Ernie. :luck: Make sure to take some photos, it would be good to see him in action.

Just returned from a `proper` days sport !

28 dogs all in. The draw was done Thursday, with a proper programme for everybody !

€10 entry fee, with the perpetual Owen`Juggie`Ryan Memorial Plaque and €140 to the winner ! Runner-up €80 and trophy.

It was run in coursing format over a tough, but very fair 270 yard long stretch, with a designated slipper, who slipped the dogs perfectly.

Two dogs beaten in the 1st round were selected by a draw to be let back into the competition leaving us with 16 runners, down to 8 , then 4 and then the final ! Tough going by any standards on a day that got quite warm !

The dogs beaten in the 1st round went into a Consolation Stake with a trophy and €40 to the winner, ensuring all dogs got a couple of runs !

The meeting was run off like clockwork ! Started at 11.15 and was over by 2. They had a quad bike bringing the lure back, a judge at the top with a red and white flag and the entire meeting was DVD` !

Tea and sandwiches back in the local pub for everybody afterwards and I was home before 4 !

Ernie was easily the smallest dog there and won his first 2 rounds before he met the favourite and local `hot pot` Blacky in the q.finals !

From a level slip, Ernie edged a neck then half a length clear in the first 50 yards, before the favourite started to peg him back at the 100 yard mark. They raced together before the bigger dog (60lbs) started to get on top and at the finish he had extended it to 3 lenghts. A cracking contest !

In the semi-finals Blacky was left flat footed, as another Blacky flashed away. To his credit the favourite gradually wore him down to get up by a length.

The final was cracking race with Blacky getting first run on Sinbad who tried his utmost, but went under by a tight length with the favourite hanging on !.

A brilliant days `craic` with lads who knew their dogs and who all chased well.

I look forward to the next meeting to be organised by one of the other lads from Portlaiose.

Shane Lee with Blacky, winner of the Owen`Juggie`Ryan Memorial Plaque at Roscrea Co.Tipperary today.

Yes ! You beat him in the final ! He couldn`t believe it !

Has it a record or something or was it unbeaten? It never got near Ellie May (Not tooting my own trumpet) Could have won myself a few quid at Tipperary then!

Hey Frankie.Seem's they'd never messed, with the boy's up west.Ha ha.Hope i can drive on Sunday mate.Went to Punchestown, years ago with Silver ,and his sister Bonny.Seamus had put out the rumour that there was £500.00 up for grab's,to the fastest dog from where ever, that could beat me.They even brought greyhounds from flapping track's.When Bonny was measured 23 n 1/8 of an inch, and put out of the unders,i calmly said that i would just have to settle for 1st and 2nd,in the over's.there were a few laugh's,from a bunch of big strapping lads, who were standing with handfuls,of what looked like pure greyhound's.Just like you, i humbly walked up the field, and did my thing. They all came over and congratulated me when it was all over.Never got that £500.00 though, that was promised to the winner.Wonder what Seamus and Matt would have done, had i got beaten,by one of those big boy's.hmmm..Oh.and by the way.i did take 1st and 2nd,even though there was a bit of a difference in opinion as to who was 1st,and who was 2nd.
