He headed straight for the mushroom/toadstool/fungi again today that I mentioned he had tried to eat in another post. I attempted to take a pic of it but this is all that is left! It appears to be the only one on the entire railway (about a mile in length), either that or he's eaten them all!!

Hard to tell from the pic but it look like the mushrooms we used to eat, Lactarius deliciosus. They were found mainly under silver birches.

My dogs also eat fungi that comes up in my garden, as they are also still alive, must be OK, although the fungi looks suspiciously like Amanita verna, the most deadly mushroom of them all (w00t) . Might have some for dinner if they left me any :)

Sorry, not enough left to tell for me - but whippies are frightening. They are like dustbins and I am rarely in time to see what the delicious find was!!

I have come to the conclusion that when it comes to whippets eating habits, it is sometimes better not to know :x !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i must admit my dont usually eat stuff , they just roll in it :x

heres hoping its a normal kind of mushroom with no ill effects :)

whippets are discusting sometimes arnt they :x

just how strong are whippets stomachs then as if they like to eat just about everything they can find when out,how are they at keeping it in

nothing worse than coming down in the morning to see last nights snack displayed all over the floor in liquid form :x

my last dog was like this so i suppose i am used to it :- "

Well, he's determined to finish it off because he rushed straight to it and grabbed a mouthful again today!! (w00t) It's about the only time he gets a wriggle on, normally he strolls along so that he doesn't miss anything remotely edible! :- "

Still alive and well tho' .............. I wonder if he would be any good as a Truffle Hound. Probably not, cos he would eat them after finding them!!

I know, poor Frogdog! :b

Let him eat it, then he wont have 'mushroom' for any other rubbish :- "

Is it Honey fungus?

I do think you need to be careful thou, one of my dogs ate 'Dogs mercury' which is a small spring woodland plant. Its tiny white flowers give off a smell of rotting meat because it is pollonated by flies. But it is also very toxic. Willow used to go into the woods even after she had nearly died and try to eat another load. We had a VERY sick dog and a VERY big vet bill. (w00t)

This is what worried me but, as I say, he is still very much alive and well and I cannot find any others.  I do try and monitor what he eats but the poor dog has got to have some time off the lead!

This looks like Sulphur Polypore - common name 'Chicken of the Woods', which is edible to humans and tastes (as the name implies) just like chicken when it is cooked. Maybe it tastes like chicken uncooked, if you are a whippet!!

I have just been reading all of the above, and was wondering  because Harley has recently (only in the last fortnight) started running off at full speed to a particular part of the common where we go as soon as we get there, and will not come back for ages, and when talking to a few other owners whilst waiting for him, they mentioned truffles, is this some sort of mushroom??? sorry if i sound ignorant but one lady said that her greyhound goes mad for truffles, it just seems odd that he has started chasing off after whatever this may be ... have any other whippies started showing this odd (well prob quite normal!!) behaviour recently or is Harley just becoming really disobedient as he's growing up :teehee:

Blimey! If there are truffles there, go get them! You could make yourself a fortune.

Sounds just the sort of thing TJ does, once he has found a delicious something that can't be eaten all at once!! Usually a deer carcase or, in the Spring, the milky calf poo!

If your dogs look for truffles better get your spades out, one truffle can be worth 150pounds :) ;
