i cant believe it, charlie tore his ear lastnight on our eve walk (least hes leaving alfie alone now!) there was blood everywhere in the car  and then when we got home all over the house, i did wash it its not nice at all, and everytime he shook his head blood went everywhere including up my walls :( i put him in the crate for a couple of hours hoping it would dry up, which it did a bit, but i didnt want to leave him in there all night, so when i went down this moring it looked like a butchers :x sooo how can i stop it bleeding everytime he shakes his head? bearing in mind this is a 10 month old pup, also should i take him to the vets?

also can i still show him ? its about an inch long on the underside of the ear when its back against his head, if you no what i mean  sorry to go :b :*

I personally would take him to the vets but I'm an over anxious mother  Just recentley I think Jones had the same problem and someone recommended putting a sock over it to stop them shaking their head  hope he heals quickly :luck: :luck:

Sorry about Charlie - hoping his ear gets better. :luck: :luck:

:luck: Get Well Soon, Charlie :luck:

For heaven's sake get the dog to a vet. You might need to do so to save his life. I am not kidding... we had a boy called Jack who tore his ear in play and the bleeding was as you described. We could not stop it and the house was blood speckles from floor to ceiling and all the walls. The vet cauterized it and sent him home advising crate rest, away from other dogs till it had healed for a few days. We did as he advised. I went to work but had a funny feeling and came home at noon hour to check on him. The first thing I saw was blood floor to wall. Jack had scratched at his ear, re-opening the wound and the bleeding was unimagineable. We rushed him back to the vet and he had lost so much blood he had to have a transfusion! All this from a nick in the ear near that vein that feeds the ear. Jack spent the rest of his time recuperating with a halo on. It was scary.

When there is as much blood as you describe better safe than sorry so please take your boy to the vet.

I agree with Avalonia, get him to the vets. I had a manchester terrier who cut his ear on barbed wire whilst chasing birds. There was blood everywhere. He even managed to get blood all over the vets waiting room. The vet put three stiches in his ear and treated him with anti biotics because of possible infection from the wire. Either put a sock over his ears as suggested or a bandage round his head over both ears. Hopes he gets well soon.

Hi, this happened to us just last week with our dog pup,I think when he was playing with his sister she has caught hold of his ear and ripped it :( and like Charlie there was blood everywhere you would've thought someone had been slaughtering something :x Badger had a 1in slice too but it did eventually gel and then seal up,we just put him in his bed with something to keep him occupied until it did though later that day he reopened it whilst shaking his head but we just put him back in his bed again and it healed up again  I think that dog's ears are like ours,I remember catching an earring years ago and the amount of blood was astronomical. So my opinion would be if it's not still bleeding and has gelled over all right he should be ok,but if you can't get it to stop go to the vet.

But I do think it looks like there is more blood than there actually is with cut ears.

Regarding whether you can show or not.........the answer is YES, Whippets are a working breed and are therefore allowed cuts and marks in the ring. ;)

Hope this helps, and Charlie's ear heals quickly

thanks for all the advice  charlies ear didnt bleed again after i posted this topic ! i did speak to my vet this morning, but as it had stoped she said it would be ok and to take him straight in if he opened it again. but like i said it seems fine and he is fine in himself to

must also add that i told OH about what i had posted on here and he said the cut on charlies ears is about a cm long if that :b :- " and if thats an inch cut then his (OH)s willy is huge   he thought that pehaps id gone over the top a bit, as if id panic like that :- " anyway everything is fine now so thanks again

Ears always bleed so much  ........If it starts bleeding again, just bandage his ears flat to his head  .......He'll look really silly but it'll stop the bleed :)
