Friday morning on my way to work, suddenly running towards me but on the pavement appears a small whippet pup maybe 4 - 5 months old. No collar, no lead, nothing.

Thankfully I immediately slowed right down, looking for somewhere to pull in when he tore straight across the road in front of me. Thank god i was only at a crawl anyway or i would have hit him.

Suddenly from round the corner appears a young lad who starts screaming & yelling at the pup "Get here". The pup eventually very submissively crawled towards the teenager who put a slip lead on it, slapped it & yanked it off down the road.

To say i was furious was an understatement BUT i had no where to pull in, was now blocking all the traffic behind me so had to drive on :(

I went round the block, came back but they were no where in sight :(

This morning on my way home from walking my lot, i decided to pop in the local shop to get some milk, low & behold there is the whippet pup out side the shop which is on a main road, again no lead, no collar, just mooching around in & out of the road on its own.

I flew out of the van and as i did the teenage lad appeared from out of the shop yelled "get here" & off he started to walk.

I called out to him & asked if i could have a word, he stopped & i approached him. I told him it had been me in the van last week that had nearly hit this poor pup when it ran straight out in front of me & told him it should be on a lead & collar. I told him he was breaking the law to start with by not having a collar & id tag on, to which he replied "so what the police know me anyway & haven't said anything, i see them everday"

I then asked what he knew about whippets & did he realise they were a hound with a very strong urge to chase & hunt, if this pup saw one of the many cats in the area & hared straight across the road not only could it get itself killed but also cause a major accident.

To this he merely shrugged & said "so what, ive got his registration & all his papers"

I wasn't getting anywhere fast so i asked where he had got the pup & thankfully i vaguely recognised the name he gave.

I told him that i knew who the breeder was & i would be informing them to which he shrugged & told me to "p*** off".

When i got home i trawled through loads of old catalogues looking for a contact number which i thankfully found & rang & informed the person concerned.

Hopefully this will now be dealt with BUT i will be keeping a look out each day just incase

good on you, shame you couldn't give him a slap

well done - poor little pup - lets hope the breeder can get the puppy back.

i think id have dognapped this poor pup. :- " what are the chances of it reaching 12 months of age with an idiot like this for an owner.good on you for taking the time and trouble to do something about it.hopefully he may take notice of the breeder but somehow i doubt it. :( id have asked him what use are your registration papers when your pups dead from a traffic accident. also he is liable for any damages awarded by the court cos his dog is off the lead and out of control in a public place.(not that hes got any money to claim anyway!)

Well that is one thing Kris he was obviously lying about, it transpires he does NOT have the registration papers anyway. :- "

heres an idea.if hes known to the police then report his dog for nearly causing an accident and tell them the dog has been seen by you with no lead on on a public road and that other drivers have had to swerve to avoid hitting it.maybe the police may pay him a visit and tell him to get it on a lead or else?

poor little dog.

Good on you nina. What about informing the dog warden too? And (altho maybe I shouldn't ask), how on earth did he get sold a puppy anyway? Altho, I know, I know, people can be really plausible when looking for a pup or can even buy through a third party.

Hope something gets done for this little dog.

Poor pup. :(

This owner is just asking for the pup to get hurt. What a pilluc.(sp)

He must be really thick to take him out without a lead and collar, he obviously does'nt know anything about the breed. Makes me wonder how he came to be owning one. He's acting so irresponsible and putting that poor pups life at risk.

Blimey its a good job there are people like you who take the time and trouble to try and sort out such complete tankers  spelling error Hope his breeder can get him back. Next time the pup is on his own outside shop, pick him up and take him to police or dog warden as im sure you have to pay to get them back. It might make him think twice, oh forgot you need a brain to think   jan

I'm hoping the situation gets sorted out now, although i have to say i do really have my doubts :(

If i see him out again alone, he will disappear :- "

good for you,i'd help it disappear to if i saw it (w00t)

poor little dog though :(

Go for it. This pup needs to be saved from the idiot.

Many years ago I Catknapped a beautiful white cat and took it to the vet because it had had an operation and the owner did not bothered to have the stiches removed- they had been in there for about 8 weeks. I paid the vet and he told me to put it back where I found it. I did and a few weeks later it got killed by a car :( - I should have kept it. I think I was to honest. I have never forgotten it.

Wendy

I'm just sooo worried he gets hit by a car, he is such a dear little thing & only a baby.

I cant in all honesty see this lad putting him on a lead & collar, infact i can imagine it making him more determined to look the "hard man"

If i involve the dog warden this lad will just deny it, so its my word against his & its not like the pup is out all day on its own so the warden could see it for himself & to be honest unless you can get the warden at the very time that he is walking along the road with it off the lead, there's not much you can do.

I somehow think the police are more interested in him for something more than having a pup off the lead & again unless they actually see him its proving it & as they dont want to even come out when your car is broken into & your property is stolen i dont hold out much hope for this.

I really dont know what to do for the best :(

The question is; would you sell pup to a teenager? I certaily would not. It is likely his parents bought the pup and maybe they should be approached and asked if they realised their son is letting the pup run loose near busy roads.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, its a bit more complicated than that :- "

It appears the young lad in question is the boyfriend of a "family member" that now owns the pup

I know three young lads ( friends of my son ) that have whippet x or luchers from pups and they seem to want to rule the dogs by fear. They do not believe in training a dog properly. They only listen to one another - they are always right!

None of these dogs have ever been seen on a lead. Thankfully, I have not heard of any being involved in the road accident.

Young people do not listen to reason. I know my son (22) thinks he knows best in everything - until it goes very wrong!

Wendy

Poor pup, it doesn't sound as though he has much of a life with an owner like that.

I would definitely have a word with the Dog Warden, it is their job to make sure owners comply with the law - which means dogs wearing collars and tags and not running loose where they could cause accidents.

If I saw the pup loose again without a collar I'd be tempted to pick him up and hand him in as a stray - the owner would have to pay kennelling costs and a fee to get him back which might make him think twice. If he didn't claim him within seven days then he could be rehomed (or you can report him to the dog warden as a stray and offer to take him in yourself, but you then have to keep him 28 days before he is legally yours to keep or rehome).

DRIVE OVER THE OWNER  THEN SAY THAT HE RAN OUT IN FRONT OF YOU CHASING HIS DOG. THAT SHOULD FIX THE LITTLE WASTER

Now this i idea i like (w00t)

On a serious note, i'm hoping that by informing the person in question what is going on, they now have the opportunity to put the situation right.

I will be on the look out EVERY day & if i see just once that the same thing is happening & they have not done anything about the situation then it will call for other measures to be taken
