I have had both poodle and number of sighthounds (including Whippets); the poodle was the only dog I ever had who I was unable to stop killing our poultry. We got her at 6 weeks, as was the norm then, and the ducks and hens were already there. She knew she was being bad, she tried not o even look at them, but now and then she just could not help herself and off she went; doesn't matter how much I yelled at her she did not stop until she had one of them dead. On the other hand; I have brought home adult Borzoi who never seen any farm animals and one word and he knew to ignore them. When i moved to smaller place, I did not have any hens for a long time, and so when I got some the Whippets never seen one before, yet withing few days the dogs were fine with them; never chased them. But of-course, if you bring up Whippet teaching him to chase small fury things it may be a different story. My Whippets will stop and come back if they take off after rabbit and i call them.
Our poodle definitely had doggy smell, maybe not as much as Labrador but I was used to Borzois and whippets, and comparing to them she definitely stunk when she got wet. And as was already said; Poodles need lots of grooming; they need trim about once a month or at least once every 6 weeks. It is not quite true that they do not shed, it is just that it does not fly around, the dead hair get mated into their coat, so unless you brush constantly (or keep the dog shorn) you will have mats to deal with.
