As has been said many a time before everyone schools pups differently and every pup is different, it should be up to the individual & club to know whether a pup is ready to have little handslips. All ours have had little slips behind the lure from a young age, more importantly to me is whether that dog has a long career. Maralyn (although owned by Steve & Julie at the time) was running at a young age, she had her last race with us at 9yrs old retiring uninjured. Taylor Maid started young and had her last race at 7 1/2 and retired uninjured, Maid Your Point & his 2 brothers all nearly vets and schooled young. Only dog we had that retired early was Sail Away, plagued with toe injuries all his career 10/16 toes bust & two torn gracilis - very lightly raced at that.

Personally I don't see what the rush is all about

Whippets spend a quarter of their life racing (if that). Pups should be enjoying puppy hood, plenty of free running, going to their club socialising, playing and building sound character and keeness for the lure.

Whether a dog is a flying machine or not, it will at some point be beaten and personally I think a mature dog takes it on the chin a lot easier than a youngster does.

I also like to see our dogs living their last days out like they did as youngsters, that being running free and frolicking about. I love seeing 14 yr old Soapy Joe running over the moss every day and take great pride in our OAP's being in excellent condition. I personally would be devastated if one of our dogs wasn't still running at veteran age as I think it's a huge achievement to have a consistent open class adult racer to go on and race a succesful veteran career.

Those dogs that have ran in adults at veteran age I have even higher regard for because it's generally a good indicator that the dog's near bombproof. In fact we did this last night with King Bear while his little Nephew and Niece cheered him on :D

ive never had a dog race past the age of four 4 some reason and every one of my dogs gets schooled how and when its ready 4 instance mickey whizz running @ 8 months did his accescory carpol @ aged 3 kept him off for 6 months and he ran another year until the carpol went again. retired aged 4. whisper whizz not running properly until about 14 months dropped a muscle aged 4 retired. nikki whizz scooled somewhere aged between the 2 and now retired aged 3 and half due to tibia crest and gracilius injuries. so i dont think its got out to do with wot age they r racing from how long they last JMO maybe if i start with one aged 4 it will race into vets lol (w00t)

as soon as my pups are 10 week they are out with me in the fields free running getting into mischief just bein a pup i always give my pups a 30yds dash into the lure at the age of 6 month then put them up till they are around the 8 month mark ill like to have them in arace at old hall by the 11month mark so they are getting a 3 yard lift then when they reach about 13 month i put them up till they are about 15 month and they offen come back the lot better dog its every ones choice

as for racing a dog to past a veteran age i have nether had no luck at that end its not for the lack of work or the trips to drakes or general well bein of the dog.

and yet now the old dogs still have a gd walk and have healthy diet (unlike the owner lol) just friends still catches my tea now again

Seen Just Friends run at Blidworth (Superleague) and Southport at veteran age in adult class and he certainly held his own with highly rated adults Andy. Some folk just remember the titles I tend to rate dogs on what they run against not what they're running for. If they happen to be of veteran age then I personally think they're of the highest calibre.
