Hi all.

Want to our dog club today, Zeb was really good today, did everything a told him to do. Even his 2 min sit stay. :- "

All was going ok until we did our car work.( :b Zebs doing his silver in march with luck) The trainer told us to put the dog into the car like normal, then walk away from the car walk across the 12 space car park across the road wait for a few mins, then go back to the car with a dog standing right next to the car (if the dog was in the boot then next to the boot, or if the dog was in the back seat then next to the back door).

When i said that i would not walk away from the car, the trainer and all the others in the group asked why? My response was that i would never leave my dog in the car for any langth of time. As if sameone was in the car park looking for dogs they could brake a window and get the dog out. I would not leave Zeb like that. Plus he is not good in the car and leaving him like this could possible make him worse. :(

Everyone thought i was mad.

Was i right to think this or was i wrong.?

Well for what its worth i for one think you were 100% right

Having had 2 dogs stolen from my vehicle in a matter of minutes, i would never ever recommend leaving a dog unattended in a car whether it be at a show or ANYWHERE ;)

Good on you for standing up for what is best for your little one

I'm shocked that a trainer would suggest doing such a thing!

You were totally in the right and good on you for speaking up. I bet alot of other owners would just have blindly followed the trainers instructions thinking, well they must know best.

Stick to yer guns!

I think your right too, if I walked away from my car and the whips were in it they would be very upset because they're not used to it, when we are at racing they are ok in the van because there are lots of people around who are all taking notice of the dogs, but if we were anywhere else we wouldn't leave them in the van either, unattended.

Does his mean he won't pass his award if you wont do it :(

While I think you are right not to leave your dog in the car. I also won't leave mine in the car. In this instance I think you missed a training opportunity to leave Zeb (in a safe & secure enviroment) for a few minutes, while you quietly observed his reaction. As Zeb is not good in the car, you could have returned to him just before he started to get distressed.

What shocks me here is the remark about people putting their dogs in the boot. Is this a common practice in the UK??

I think it's only when it is an estate car - at least I hope so!

what a pillock you know what to do dont you go somewhere else somewhere were the trainer has a braincell when i took mine to training class the trainer told me that the dog stays with you you do not leave the dog alone in a car or (i see this all the time ) tied up out side a shop it takes 1 second to break the window in a car and 5 seconds to take the dog.

Yes but only in a hatch back with the parcel shelf removed! They can still look out of the window :) People get dog guards so that the dog can't jump through to the driver. We put our dogs in the boot or our range rover and we used to when we had the golf too, where do you put your dogs then? on the seats? Tried that before with ours in safety harnesses but they wouldn't sit still and kept falling off the seats

Zeb was in our hatchback, I could of tryed him out but we were also told to only open the car up when there was another dog right in the line of vision. I know afew dogs that would not like to do this. Usually if i see a dog caming along the road then i will not open the boot until it has gone passed. Not because of zeb but you dont know the temperment of the dog on lead.

out of 6 of us i was the only one to say no. one lady said that she leaves her jr in the car all day, well she is at work, the dog is only let out when she is on a break or at lunch time. the car is hes kennel. :( we are always being told not to leave the dogs outside shops tied up, but this did shock me.
