Hello,

I was advised to post in this section so hope someone can help! I'm looking for a training club to take my two whippet pups to. I'm in Widnes, Cheshire and have been to Ditton DTC in Widnes but they say they won't have under 16s :( As I've got two pups, my 12 year old son was going to handle one of them while I train the other. He's really keen so I'd rather take him than my husband!

Anyone know of any good clubs nearby? I've got a car so can travel further afield to reach one that likes kids! My son is really responsible and a natural with the dogs so I'd like to encourage him.

Cheers for any help.

hiya hope you come along to wessy with your pups. It.s great socialising for them and just coming along letting them watch the racing will get them keen for running. Also I think a few of us will be doing some puppy training at the gin pit on saturdays when the ground softens. Either pm vicky or myself on here or you can give me a bell on 07852328020

cant understand not letting kids in a club they are the future of any sport

Does the lady mean sit stay, or racing as she has been to a dog training club. Les.

i was wondering the same. Even in dog showing they have junior handling. If it.s obediance type training you'd think it would be beneficial for children to learn as well so they can at least understand dog behaviour and learn about their and our own body language and how it will effect a dog. Don't think this club is doing themselves many favours the practicality of finding a child minder is a big enough problem and would anyone want to when most pets are considered family dogs anyway?

I originally meant basic training (was advised by another k9er to post here just to reach wider Northern audience  ) BUT given the lack of safe running areas around Widnes (how many motorways and expressways can one town have??) I had given the idea of racing a second thought. Have absolutely no experience of it but just fancied letting the dogs have a run off lead, meet other whippets etc even if it goes no further than that. Still need some basic training though are doing alright (are house trained, sit, stay (after a fashion), come back when on long lead etc. Pups are 15 weeks old.

Roscoe and Grover are pedigrees but like I said, this section was recommended due to number of people reading it. Thanks for all the welcomes and replies

There's a lovely group of Pedigree's over at A&T (and the odd lurcher, and terrier, any anything else) the club are very supportive of all new members and any dog they wish to bring is made very welcome. The club even hosts classes for peds at their opens which allows the peddie members to join in absolutely everything  .

there a few that just run there dogs for exercses there not catully race traning so yours wont be thye only ones and there kids there aswell so your 12 year old will fit in fine. we have a dog traner in Bury whos very good and lets any age or ability train there dogs have had aquiet a few of mine tyere and my dauters been there from age 7 no problem he beleves all the family should learn how to handle dogs.

If ya are looking for a basic obedience club or agility type training for your whippy pups they have good dog training at Myercough College and they actively encourage junior handlers. If ya interested have a look on myerscough college web site , there is a contact number i think. Hope this helps
