as so many rescues in Ireland send dogs to rescues in Britain, where they usually find homes more quickly than in Ireland, would it be worthwhile networking with exhibitors who come to Ireland for dog shows?

The whippet show in Co Antrim at the end of this month, the Irish championship show circuit in the south of Ireland in August, and the UK all breed ch. show in Sept all attract exhibitors from Britain. I would imagine at least a few people would have room to put an extra crate in their vehicles.

I'm especially interested to hear opinions from people who work in animal rescue organisations on the feasibility of this proposal

Rainbow rehoming in Derry would like to find places for two female lurchers, medium size, good temperaments (though one is perilous to cats). One of them has already been spayed, both vaxed. I've had one offer of transport, to Sunderland, from the whippet club show and am trying to find rescue space in that area for at least one of these lurchers.
