The problem with boot guards (which do prevent the dog from becoming a projectile) is they don't protect the windows. In a rear collision the windows can (and generally do) blow out which means the dog can still escape.

I got a built in car crate very reasonably priced from http://www.hamsterbaskets.co.uk/. They have specs on file for many current cars, but they will make to order for any car. Very good people to work with, and very good prices compared to others. I've had mine now for almost 9 years.
