i've always wonders if some dogs trap really well because they are taught or they are just naturals. some people tend to always have dogs that trap really well could it be luck

i think most are just good trappers sensible dogs that dont go crackers in traps.but how good would most of them be without a kickboard.

I think most of the time good trappers have it in them to start off with, others can trap excellent one week and lousy the next, and some are just phenominal all the time.  Lancaster WRC always used to have good trappers at their opens and my what  i thought was a good trapper always got murdered out but it was only when i got a dog that had been brought up there that i twigged why.

Peter Lagan was trap man and would operate the traps electrically about 15 yard away from the traps on the left hand side but in front of the traps so the dogs could see.  When the lure was in place Peter would wave a flag, all the dogs could see this and the regulars would know and get down ready to fire out.  When i first got my bitch and was watching her trap a kid was messing about with the flag near the traps and i noticed that she automatically got down ready to trap, she has always been good out of the boxes!!!!!

trap boards were nearly banned were'nt they. i think older dogs would struggle if they have used them for a couple of years.

probably but if stopped i dont think it would make much diference to most results, but may reduce injuries, i do use them but would be quite happy not to.

with regard to trapping i consider that dogs have to start at a very early age and have consistent  practice ,as in anything  practice makes perfect. We always raced without kick boards at Lancaster prior to Steve and Juilie Bateson getting Mr Ben as we were still racing rag dogs and in the process of changing to lure racing most dogs were large and trapped quite well without .Good as Gold visited the Lancaster track  and never needed a board i also had a dog called 22 carat which could out trap most dogs by 3 or 4 yards without a board.I would also like Neil be quite happy to race without them now, providing of course that everyone else followed suit. Maybe the BWRA could organise a taster event for those of like mind.

Hello to K9 participants.

We are new to the site, but have enjoyed what we have seen so far.

We tend to agree with Neil & Steve. We don't think that with or without kickboards, the results would vary much.

We agree that there may be more injuries, due to kick boards and also they take up a lot of time, at the beginning of each race. Do we really need them ?

P.S Does anyone ever go on to the K9 chat.

I have a little blue bitch whom im sure could almost out trap anything!! we used to race at preston and used prestons ramps, but she used to kick off so hard she used to snap them in two:shocked:, this cannot be safe for dogs, it would'nt bother me too much if they were banned, but as everyone says the older dogs may suffer it, but then maybe they won't:cheesy:

K9 chat:- we do go on it, but try and make sure there are enough active users on the site, glad you've enjoyed coming onto k9, if you know anyone with internet access and whippets get them to come on
