Hi all,

I wonder if anyone has had any experience with tumours in the mouth in their whippets. I'm desperate for a bit of reassurance!

Kitty, my wonderful 8yr old whippet had a lump suddenly appear on her upper gum. (Large pea sized on a stalk, about half a cm away from the gum margin and redder than the surrounding gum in colour). As it sat next to a bit of a nasty tooth I assumed it was an abcess and booked her in for her tooth removed, however, the vet examined her and instantly without explanation began to refer to it as a tumour, adding that 'some were better than others' - terrible bedside manner! I was totally stunned.

A more friendly surgeon has said (without seeing it) that it will probably turn out to be an epulis - (having looked it up - a benign tumour, though not without problems), but has sent a 'wedge' of it off to be biopsied and cauterised the remainder - does this give any clues as to whether it will be benign or malignant? He was unavailable to discuss the op with me and my conversations with the vet nurses have only made me more worried as I can't tell if they know more than they are letting on.

I have scoured the internet for info. and frightened myself silly into the bargain. Does anyone have any personal info. about oral tumours, benign or otherwise to help me get this into perspective? I am so so worried...

Thanks in anticipation!

Rachel

i do know of a friends whippet with similar, turned out benign so was fine

Try not to worry, its easy to say i know :luck: :luck:

hi, sorry to hear about this. ive a friend whos dog had exactly the same kindve lump. at one stage it was the size of a brussel sprout but didnt seem to cause any discomfort (god knows how ? ).

her vet put the dog on a course of steroids and the lump is now "pea sized". it has stayed that size for a few months now.

maybe another vet trip is in order and a course of "prednisolone" might help.

hi

our old boxer dog had half a dozen in his mouth at one point and had them removed/cauterized and he was perfectly fine and none of them grew back and apart from a sore mouth for about a week after surgery he had no problems at all.

Most mouth lumps are epuli, benign lumps but you can occasionally get oral cancers. The vet wouldn't probably be able to tell by just looking at it, so there was probably no more to say!! As soon as you get lab results you will know either way Try not to worry, sure she'll be fine. Let us know the results :)

try not to worry our border terrier had one removed about two years ago vet said uncommon in hard mouthed dog usually in labs spanials ect and nearly always grow back we were very worried as hers was cancer so far so good no sign at all

Hope everything turns out ok :huggles: :luck: :luck:
