Hi all,
I wonder if anyone has had any experience with tumours in the mouth in their whippets. I'm desperate for a bit of reassurance!
Kitty, my wonderful 8yr old whippet had a lump suddenly appear on her upper gum. (Large pea sized on a stalk, about half a cm away from the gum margin and redder than the surrounding gum in colour). As it sat next to a bit of a nasty tooth I assumed it was an abcess and booked her in for her tooth removed, however, the vet examined her and instantly without explanation began to refer to it as a tumour, adding that 'some were better than others' - terrible bedside manner! I was totally stunned.
A more friendly surgeon has said (without seeing it) that it will probably turn out to be an epulis - (having looked it up - a benign tumour, though not without problems), but has sent a 'wedge' of it off to be biopsied and cauterised the remainder - does this give any clues as to whether it will be benign or malignant? He was unavailable to discuss the op with me and my conversations with the vet nurses have only made me more worried as I can't tell if they know more than they are letting on.
I have scoured the internet for info. and frightened myself silly into the bargain. Does anyone have any personal info. about oral tumours, benign or otherwise to help me get this into perspective? I am so so worried...
Thanks in anticipation!
Rachel
