No offence has been committed aprart from Andrea being scared (which I sympathise with). But could you imagine the police investigating this?

Judge: You are charged with the offence of coughing at a woman!

Defence: He was letting her know he was there!

Prosecution: She'd been on the Brandy and cokes all night before, was a little worse for wear but could tell that he was up to no good by his body language!

I'm sorry that Andrea was upset but don't think that every bloke walking through fields in the early hours is a rapist or kiddy fiddler! As for the "if he's innocent so what" quip, tell that to the familly of the bloke who was shot in London last week by the Police!

I'm usually out at antisocial times in some bunny paradise in the middle of nowhere. Most people think I'm mad. I do quite often come across the odd bloke (apart from the tramps I know are camped out in various places) on their own and dogless, they are usually keen to look the other way. I don't know what they're upto and as long as they don't interfere I don't really care. If they're dealing drugs I'd rather they were doing it there than on the corner of my road to be honest.

There has been the odd indecent assault on the Thames path where I walk, which did make me think, but I've been physically assaulted a number of times in my life now, and always in the middle of town where in theory there should have been plenty of people around to intervene.

Maybe write down a description of the man while he is fresh in your mind, and if any crime HAS happened you can then make a statement.

Thank goodness you are safe!Always be vigilant, never go to the same place same time, be aware what is around you. No you  were not over-reacting, so what if he was innocent, what if he wasnt? You just cant be too careful these days.

Scott if you were refering to my my post, re read it i didnt quip if hes innocent so what, anyway the police probably wouldnt come out, but they would be aware of it if anything GOD FORBID something does happen in the future.

Too many people turn a blind eye and situations can be avoided.

Well i didnt mean to sound flippant about thats what i meant.

the same could be said the other way. We past the funarl prosison on friday morning of the 10 year old girl who was killed in leigh. just yards from her home in a local feald.

i saw her poor family it was hartbreaking if i saw someone behaving in a way I was not happywith i would call the police without hessition.

Hi This was sent to me a while back thought it may be useful to put out it on here, as when i read it i was surprised at some of the information, if it helps one person it would be worth, i will copy it out in its entirety:

Through A Rapists Eyes - Metropolitan police Issued

Newsletter Oct 2003.

A group pf rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a victim and here are some interesing facts:

1. The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle, They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail or hairstyle that can be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Woman with short hair are not common targets.

2. The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for a woman whos clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many carry sissors around to cut clothing.

3. They also look for woman on a mobile phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking, because they are off guard and can easily be overpowered.

4.The time of day men are most likely to attack and rape a woman is in early morning. between 5am - 8.30am.

5. The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location, where they dont have to worry about getting caught.

6. Only 2% said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3-5 year sentence, but rape with a weapon 15-20 years.

7. If you put up any kind of fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isnt worth it because it will be time-consuming.

8. These men said they would not pick on woman who have umberella, or similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands. Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you're not worth it.

9. Several defence mechanisms he taught us are: If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage orwith you in a lift or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like whats the time?or make general small talk, i cant believe its so cold out here, were in a bad winter. Now you have seen their face and could identify them in a line up, you loose your appeal as a target.

10. If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell stop or stay back! Most of the rapists talked to said they'd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back, again they are looking for an easy target.

Forward this to everywoman you know, its simple stuff but it could save lives.

7. If you put up any kind of fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isnt worth it because it will be time-consuming.

sorry but this is extremely dangerous advice to give.fighting back with some rapists will only excite and inflame them.ive just finished reading a paper by F.B.I. profilers on types of rapists(and yes there are types and all rapists fall into one category or another) and to fight back with some of these guys could mean the difference between being raped (but surviving) and being killed and NOT surviving.the best advice they give is to talk to the rapist and to try to make yourself become a human being to them rather than a victim.that way you can try and develop some empathy between you and the rapist and although he may still rape you hes less likely to kill you, torture you, or beat you, as you have built up a rapport with him and become more than a 'piece of meat'.(there are some psychopaths that whatever you do you wont build up any empathy cos they dont have any, they view other people as 'dummies ',only there to play a part in their sick fantasies)i think it was the notorious railway rapist who was jailed some years ago after a series of horrific rapes and murders let his last victim go free cos she did this,he couldnt kill her as he felt sorry for her,and although he knew she would probably be able to identify him he didnt kill her like he did the other women he attacked.she talked to him.there have been numerous cases of murderers and rapists who have let a victim go alive because they talked to the attacker, one even said' she made me feel like a man,she didnt talk down to me.'stay safe, dont walk around with earphones in,texting or doing anything else.walk briskly as if you have somewhere to go and something to do,dont dawdle, look straight ahead with your head held high in a confident manner, dont look down as if you're a victim.one thing all these guys have in common is an uncanny ability to see a victim.they are extremely good at reading body language, they have to be.they spend hours following women and watching them.they will be able to pick out a confident assured woman out of a crowd and leave her well alone.they prefer the little mouse who quietly ambles along, not watching her surroundings or whats going on around her.its a dangerous world out there folks ,take care

Tony I make a lot of people sick and I do not think that this is a funny subject, however the last time I looked at the laws of the land it was innocent until proven guilty! :b

Ok I've had a few 'incidents' and one thing I strongly recommend you doing is changing your routine Andrea. I rarely make the same route twice within a week, I stick to road walking and on approaching people I walk in the road rather than the pavement so I'm not easily snatched into an alleyway or driveway. As has been said previously, use assertive body language and layered clothing. Self defence training is very useful too for both building your confidence and god forbid, you'll have the knowledge if you ever need to practice it.

As for parks, I don't do them unless I'm either with someone else or it's a busy time of day although the latter can be a nightmare with nosey whippets!
