Had a call today from a friend of mine asking for a microchippers , her friend spent a lot of money bringing an abused dog over from abroad, done the qaurantine thing etc, and had approx 5 yrs with this dog , he isnt in good health and was under the vets for a series of health problems he is now approx 13 yrs old and the ladys world.

well yesterday the dog got out, he dodnt have very good sight etc and a bit doddery, but anyway the dog went 1 way and the family went to other searching for the old boy, someone in the meantime picked him up and took him to the local vets as he seemed confused etc and the police wouldnt take him, within an hr of the family loosing the dog they had tracked where he was so family jumps in car to go and to collect their much loved dog.

when they get there they are told the dog has been put to sleep and that they ought to be disgusted with the state he was in and should have been under a vets care!!, THEY WERE THE VETS BLOODY TREATING HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The family have been told basically there is nothing they can do as he was old and ill and basically tough , he should have been microchipped

I urge anyone who doesnt have there dogs chipped to read this stroy and think how you would be feeling if this had happened to you

i would like to know what can be done also on the behaviour of this vet practice too, just shows they are happy enough to take your money but dont ever recognise dogs they are treating regularly!!!!

F***king Hell

Id be soo pissed off if that were my dog, Id Seek legal advice if i was your friend tanya..

is disgusting that a vet wouldnt reconise a dog they had been treating

Kev

Cant believe that has happened the vet had no right to do such a thing   i would be seeking legal advice. Poor family what a shame and dreadful thing to have to go through my thought are with them.

RIP run free

 ffs that terrible (nothing they can do )my ass id be dragging ther asses throu the courts big time

Tanya i think you will find the vets will have their arse's covered they always

seem to, i had problems with one and within days he had gone from saying i

had a very strong case to nothing i could prove............they are sly and back

each other up..............needless to say im at a different practice.

Its awful what they've done to the dog

:( Totaly disgusting.

VETS

Poor poor family. :(

I myself had an experience at the vets only last night, he wasn't going to get his own way i can tell you.

I can't F***k**G believe what im reading!!!!! surely its enough to have them struck off!!!!! i can't imagine how the owners must be feeling : :(

 Its disgraceful. They didnt even give the poor dog a chance

That is the most reprehensible thing I've heard for ages!!!

Surely the vet has to keep the dog for a set period of time before PTS.

There's got to be some comeback on that veterinary practice - they are playing at being GOD!!!

My sympathy to the poor family for their loss :( .... run free old boy

That is absolutely atrocious.  I find it so sad to read what happens at some vet surgeries these days. Surely they could have kept the poor dog comfortable until the owners were traced. What gave them the right to destroy it so quickly.

RIP poor dog

Hard to believe whats happened to this poor dog. It's appalling the way they dealt with him. They had no idea if it was owned or not.

The owners must be devastated. :(

That is the pits

I know the Royal School of Vets did have a complaints department where this sort of thing can be reported when I worked as a vet nurse.

If you give Paul the vet a ring he will tell you if its still inplace, Its worth a try to report to the top even if nothing can be done.

:luck: Lillibet

I think this is just the most appalling thing I've heard in a long time. Have they thought of going to the local newspapers? Nothing like a bit of bad publicity to put a vet in their place!!!!

Forget local papers I'd go straight to the national papers with this!

The Daily Mail often prints stories about dogs, I would definately get in touch with them.

Also your local TV station might be worth a try.

I would also be telling every dog walker/pet owner I came across!!

These stories make me so mad!

Sue

I had to read this twice! I can't believe that happened. That has got to be anyone's worst nightmare.

I would have thought the vets would have looked after the dog for a good number of days/weeks to give the owners a chance to find their beloved pet, not decide instantly to put the poor chap to sleep

I would be absolutely livid.

Having just read that The Disciplinary Committee of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons struck off a vet for refusing to make a house call (on the Gen Dog page here) I would have thought that they would be at least interested in following up the complaint.

I too would contact every newspaper/magazine I could think of to see who would pick up the story....and find out if the local radio stations have a consumer rights type show to involve as well.

The poor family must be devastated. For me, the fact that the practice didn't recognise one of their own patients is bad enough (I would expect mine to recognise all of my animals - even if they didn't connect them to me they should at least know that they 'belong to the practice' and look through the records to find me)

To put a dog down after an hour is despicable

and to state that the reason for this is due to it being neglected and in need of veterinary treatment, is an admission of negligence on their part.

The sad thing is that vets get away with this sort of thing because families are in such a distraught place after something like this happens, and can't even think about taking on the fight - I wonder if there is an organisation who would do this on their behalf???

(sorry about the excessive use of ranties, but this is a situation where 1 simply isn't enough!)

the family are as you will imagine devastated and i think thats why nothing has been done, my friend who called is a member on here but refuses to posts, hopefully she will read and then pass on to the family

i would like to personally thank you all for the kinds words

anyone wishing to know the name of the vet practice i will HAPPILY tell you :- "
