Im also disgusted by this behaviour by the vet. Please send my condolences to the family involved.

RIP to the poor old boy.

I'm so sorry for his family, they must be devastated :(

Vets are NOT responsible for stray dogs, they should pass them on to the local Dog Warden/council pound, where they have seven days to be claimed. The only possible justification for pts is in an emergency situation, such as a road accident, where the dog is suffering. In this case I don't see they have a leg to stand on legally.

What a terrible story Tanya, I feel so sorry for the owners... :( RIP run free :(

God really makes you think..... didnt think this could have been allowed till consulting the owners...

I was absolutely raving when I read about this and thought that surely this person would be able to sue the vet concerned. Off I went searching but what I've found is disgusting.

Basically vets are totally unregulated, they can do as they please with little consequence, the RCVS seem to be of little use too. Here's some links of various ongoing cases

The Telegraph This article is from 2003 and as of yet there is still no independant body instated to regulate veterinary practitioners

The main problem is because the law sees an animal as worthless, however, if just one case was taken to court and won it could open the flood gates for the future. I obviously don't know if the family concerned have the finances or inclination to take this further but I'd certainly seek an opinion. It may be worth contacting the people in the links I've posted for advice and some direction, failing that I'd most definatelty take this story to the media.

I'm deeply sorry for the family involved and their emotional distress must be considerable. :(

the trouble i find with it all is the way the vets stood and had a go at the "lack of vet care this dog was SOOOOOOOOOOO in need of etc , what bad owners etc etc and that any decent vet would have put the dog to sleep" to which the lady stopped him in his tracks through the tears , to say THEY were in fact the vets taking care of the old boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmmmmm prolonging the dogs suffering i think whilst taking as much money as possible to line their very nice posh new practice!!! :- "

How very sad :(

How I feel for this poor famliy . its not the first time something like that has happened .

I had a similar thing happen many years ago with one of my cats .

Jaffa was 19 years old ,dodery , skinny as you would expect and a bit senile , the window cleaner left the gate open and he got out , He only went about 50 yards , but far enough for no one to know him  , he ended up at the RSPCA (w00t) . luckily I was there within mins of him arriving , but I had to give them my vets name and prove he was mine and how old he was , they said had he been seen by their vet he would have been PTS , but luckily he was out :sweating:

..thats appalling...

I work at a charity animal hospital and we have alot of stray dogs handed in to us..many not chipped. We have to keep them for 7days..if they need vet care they will get it, and often some come in a right state.. The only time we will pts during those 7 days, is on welfare grounds if the dog do is in so much pain due to injury or ilness and quality of life is zilch. Sometimes dogs come in with severe problems but they are treated and managed and the dogs are comfortable, pain free and well looked after. If the owner claims the dog thy have to pay a claim fee but this includes a microchip if its not already chipped.

As far as I can see the vets that had this dog should have logged as found with petsearch even if not chipped... I cant believe they put this poor dog to sleep without giving any time for the owners to track him down. My heart goes out to the owners. It may be worth them getting in touch with the RCVS proffessional misconduct department...because this sort of thing should not be going on! It nakes me so mad!!!!

This has shocked me to the core! how distressing for the family. and to say that they should be disgraced with themselves to an obviously devastated family is beyond comprehension, i mean come on its not the average "cruel" owner who would spend so much time and money on bringin a mistreated animal from abroad. Its disgusting how these vets have behaved.

Cant really add much to what has already been said. But it does make you wonder how they can treat a animal that they concider to be in such a bad state it should be put out of its misery instantly. Doesnt quite jell does it?

Wendy

if it was me in this case id deffo bite the bullet and sue.
