Sorry it wasn't one of my whippets but my bloody beagle.

Husband is late back from work and i put his dinner under a low grill just keeping warm and the sodding Beagle Parker stole and ate a very large chicken leg including the bone.

How worried should i be in terms of potential damage to the dog(not where i kicked him up the bum (w00t) )ie will it block his innards or tear his gut with sharp bones??????

I am both very angry and very worried.

How can such a cute dog be such a little bugger

Dont worry at all. My vet recommmends chicken bones as an ideal way to clean teeth. Years ago when you ate the chickens after they were too old to lay eggs anymore, the sharp bones were a serious issue. But these days they are only at best 3-4 months old and the bones are still very soft.

I don't have any advice. But all I can say is our 13 year old ESS has done this in the past & been absolutely fine. :- "

I watched her like a hawk & worried like mad but she was OK.

:luck: :luck: Keep an eye on your Beagle & if anything seems amiss get her/him to the vets fast.

Thank you very much for the advice.

Normally i'm like a ruddy vigilante in the kitchen making sure no one nicks anything but i was on my laptop. :b

I heard crunching sounds coming from the dining room and i looked in the kitchen and saw the grill open (w00t)

I shot into the dining room like a scalded cat just as he swallowed the last bit

Bless...he looks like he enjoyed it, despite the telling off. Fingers crossed he's OK. I've never had one eat a cooked chicken bone, so can't advise.

The thing to watch out for is whether he is eating and drinking normally (once his belly is empty of HUGE CHICKEN DINNER obviously!) Any obstruction will show up by either making him throw up, stopping him eating/drinking or *ahem* stopping flow from t'other end.

Any of this happens, go to the vets to be on the safe side ........otherwise he should be fine.

This was the advice given to me by my vet nurse pal when Dij had eaten summat he shouldn't

think your self lucky it was just a leg of chicken that he pinched

i have a 48lb whippet x greyhound that as pinched a whole chicken/joints/sugar and marg(he mixed these together) you name it hes eaten it hes 7 years old

even worked out how to open the oven door so dont think your boy will come to much harm

Thanks very much guys.

I've owned dogs for fifteen years but never in that time has one eaten chicken bones and i panicked a bit which i'm not normally prone to do :b :b

The little piglet seems fine so far,he demolished his breakfast in the usual manner and he's curled up on the sofa snoring his head off :D

Cheers again for the replies :))

Glad he's okay, beagles are devils aren't they! But sooo cute  .

Glad hes still ok .... naughty boy o:) Lovely though

The OHs male Akita pinched a whole chicken fresh from the oven and ate the lot with no ill effects, he also eats them straight from freezer as well.
