Hi Steve

I may be talking out of my b*m here but if the council are not prepared to give you any support have you got anywhere thats just out of town, as the council will not be the only landowners in your area. Local farms are always looking to make a bit of extra money or villages on the outskirts of where you live may have parish councils that may be a lot more supportive because they like things that bring life into the community. Also have you approached local pet related businesses for sponsorship you could be pleasantly surprised.

I know its easy to feel disheartened but keep your chin up. If you do want to take Geoff up on his offer I will donate the offer to do a dog portrait as a raffle prize to help raise funds. If the winner supplies me with a good photograph I'll do the portrait. Im sure you'll get a lot of support.

All the best

Marie

Well done Geoff stepping in to help  but is there no chance of the BWRA stepping in to help this club,at least this year while all other avenues of sponsorship are explored. It's times like this when a club needs help that a main body could step forward  :D Karen

Don't know if my input will be of any use, but just to say we are in the middle of meetings but not with the council but with the Club where our club is situated. It too has taken on board more football pitches and also an athletic club is vying to have a training track situated on the field(who both bring in more money than the whippets). We have been assured that no matter what happens we will not loose our track and when the work does happen we will be included in it and have our land levelled along with the rest of the field, but revenue to the club is becoming a major factor and we have said that if we had a 'better' track we too could possibly bring in more revenue with more opens and racing organised by the whippet racing organisations but we need a better running surface as i do know 'Manton' gets a lot of flack from people even though after running over 30 years i would say we have no more accidents or incidents than anywhere else and i have said it before and will again a good dog will win on our track too (but thats another topic!)

The Manton Athletics Sports & Social club has also contacted BWRA etc. to ask what would be needed i think to checkout that what we have said is a 'true' record but this is to help get the funding the club is seeking from several different areas, Sport Funding and Coalfields regeneration projects etc. as its a very long road to get funding so it seems.

The whippet racing club have had to declare an amount to go towards funding and had to show our commitment towards the club, many of you will maybe remember our trustee raffle seller Kath Cockram doing the rounds at Scotland after asking for permission to run a raffle at the Derby (to which we are very grateful and thank them for allowing us to do so and to all the people who kindly bought tickets etc) what was raised by that and things we did at the club like the general spot the balls, name the puppy, a race meeting where all entries and prize money went to the proceeds we have been able to declare the sum and are once again waiting for the next step.

As for raising funds is it not possible that at some of the major meetings, if clubs wanted to organise it themselves, with permission from the national bodies they could have a stall or organise their own raffles etc. as i believed it to be that the organisations are here to help 'racing' in general and without clubs we will eventually have no where to get our 'champs  ) trained and fit anyway! I see it that most people in racing would have a go on extra raffles and spend money on stalls and its surprising how much can be raised through his kind of thing and we all then would be helping each other. Just a couple of ideas that worked for us although yes we are still waiting but we want to be ready when we are asked for our input so that we dont miss out on what has been offered to us and the good of whippet racing a new track :sweating: one day hopefully soon !!!!!! Sorry one of my essays again

A brill essay Karen  All credit to Manton members for all the work you've done  Think the idea of promoting clubs by a stall, etc at main opens is a great idea.Once one club has had a go i'm sure others would try. :D Karen

Not only could it promote and bring revenue in for clubs - it doesn't even have to be a stall anything to do with dogs for example lets think of the kids that come along and yes some get bored waiting for the racing to start or if we drag em along when they really would rather be home with their friends but HAVE to come we could do a tombola or name the cuddly doggie and try to involve the youngsters a bit more in fact they coud run the bloody stalls so we can get on with racing and not have to worry what their doing   (Yes i am a cruel mum :D )

Set a woman thinking and there's no stopping her  :D

Hi Geoff i have sent you a PM----

many thanks for all your replies and some very interesting ideas they are really appreciated and i am sure to give all options some though before going to the wall --

there is one thing that someone on here will know ---How much does third party cover cost and what is the best company to inquire with to cover what local councils require???

thanks again Steve

Dawdon's was £220 last year but goes up every year. Think Joyce phoned them for rising sun and it was a lot more. I got a lot of stick of some members when the council said we must have it. they were saying we the only club that has it but as time goes on all councils will insist club's have it. Our council won't take the rent with out a copy of the insurance. Also if you don't have insurance and a member of the public claims its the members and commitee of the club that are lible.

At the moment we are lucky as the insurance isnt an issue as it is apparently covered by the Sports and Athletics Club and all activites that take place on the ground are under this umberella, but like most clubs it would become an enormous strain on us if we had to find another £200/300 each year. At the moment we pay for the use of our stretch of land each week but all who race with us have to make themselves members of the Sports Club to use the facilities. :)

I've always said that more people should help out the club's. Trouble is they turn up to school pup's then don't come back when they in open's or it goes to a pet home if no good. If people would only keep 1 club dog or just turn up at the club's to watch then the clubs could sell raffle tickets or bonis ball's. It is a struggle raising money when you have insurance to pay on top of everything else.

hi Sharon what insurance company do you use please? i can give them a ring see what they quote --

Steve

hi yes sharon is right the rising sun r now having to fork out just short of £300 a year for public liabilty insurance luckily this year we had it in the bank but next year we will have to do a few things to raise the money. luckily 4 us we have a few opens a year so we r able to do things @ these. i remember seeing lancasters track once on a photo and it looked great. steve cud u not see about having some kind of open there? u cud sell raffles and dominos etc if u had an open & it wud b a small help. it wud b a real real shame 4 the track to close as like u say racing in lancaster since the 50s. cu u not contact your local paper with your story or something like that? good luck :luck:

I'll sort the no. out for you Steve. I know Joyce tried them and she was quoted a lot more than what we pay. think rising sun went with the one the BWRA use. Dawdon's will be in soon so god knows how much it'll go up. Its a pity clubs need it at all but that's the way the world is now, claiming for everything. I said 2 years ago that all clubs will soon need it and I was laughed at, coming true now though. Hope you get sorted and the club stays open.

I have a meeting with our local council  in the very near future and was just wondering if any others who had been successful when requesting items for the promotion of whippet racing --
-example KIrckaldy

seem to have the full weight of their local council and even THE M.E.P. right behind them they got the track all leveled /fenced /watered /cut / even gates put on for them and the council cant seem to do enough for them please let me know how you go about it ---

they even supply them with black bin liners --

dog waste bags by the bucket full --

-it seems if they want it the council really go out on a limb for them --

wouldn't this be great if  all  councils did the same --

the reason i am asking we hope that with a few more members this year we can move forward at Lancaster ------

things with regards to dog numbers are very encouraging--for 2008

only answer if you are contributing something that is sensible and that may help

Maybe it will then help other clubs  with their plans --thankyou in anticipation

Steve

Sadly (or happily) Steve, if you live in Scotland, the council will help you, whilst we have Scottish MP's telling the English what to do and how to spend OUR money we have no chance...Free everything in Scotland, pay for everything in England....Wish they were independent. Good luck to them anyhow, guess I'm jealous because all local authorities should help their tax payers, but it just doesn't happen down here...

Independence for Scotland that's what I say, please :D :D :D :D
