what would you use vet wrap for? I've seen dogs wrapped for racing.

do you think it helps prevent injuries?

the vet I spoke to doesn't advise using the wrap, says it constricts the tendons and does more harm than good -- and if using do put padding between leg and wrap (as I notice IS done with horses)

my dog suffered a minor injury during a hard day at lurcher races (2 short bend races and two 350 yard races) and has been limping a bit though he doesn't seem to be in pain. He's resting at present - the only treatment advised by this veterinarian. I'm wondering about ways to safeguard his legs. We suspect a sprained tendon in his left foreleg (pastern) but are not sure.

I wrap one of my dogs for racing and lurecoursing as he has dew claws, and has caught these on occasion.

I would stress that I do not wrap it really tight, just enough to keep it in place.

I know that vetwrap is also used to strap up stoppers if running on hard ground.

For a sprain I would advise rest as well

The way I seen it, vetwrap worn during racing was for either protecting stopper pads or prevent protrusion of dew claws. It shouldn't be bandaged so tightly as to constrict blood flow to the ligaments.

Edited to add, I personally wouldn't race a dog with an injury, preferring to wait till a full recovery was obtained as I think any support vetwrap could offer would be comprimised by the fact this pressure needed to give such adequate support would naturally comprimise the blood flow.

(w00t) Great minds and all that

I've used it to protect stoppers if the ground is hard for racing, I have on odd occasion used it they have got a cut when out or at racing and I have washed it and want to keep it clean and un nibbled until I get home

I wasn't talking of using vet wrap to support an injured dog racing, but wondering whether it would help prevent recurrence

The dog who hurt his leg had dew claws removed as a pup; perhaps I should be bandaging my other dog who does have intact dewclaws. They are neat and tight and although both by dogs have cut toe pads on various occasions (exercising, not racing) I haven't so far had any trouble with stopper pads or dew claws.

Hi Macha,

I only bandage Winx's dew claws because he has caught them. If he had run and never caused any damage I wouldn't bother.

If you haven't experienced any problems with stoppers or dew claws I really wouldn't worry
