We are thinking of getting a whippet puppy and i was wondering roughly what is the cost of all the injections etc that they have to have in the beginning? I get the impression that going to the vets can be an expensive business.

hi there- i am also getting a whippet pup- next year- but im also a vet nurse so i'll be able to help you out-

a pups 1st vaccinations are roughly around £45-£50- that includes an injection at 8 weeks and the 2nd at 12 weeks, Then every year he will need abooster- £ 32.52 they cost at my practice.

Microchips cost no more than £20- they are extremely useful- if he gets or stolen he can traced!

Then a castration costs about £ 100 should be no more, more if a bitch spey.

I would get insurance- we use pet plan- that costs £12.75 to £ 17.75 a month, that covers up to £4000 a year in vet bills but doeasnt cover routine checks- ie boosters, nail clipping etc.

I know theres a lot to take in , you r welcome to ask me more q's if you need to!

I would phone round the vets in your area and get some prices, ask if they have experience with sighthounds, and get a bit of a feel for them. When we moved from Scotland to Dorset we picked up Savannah on the way and Chelsea was also due for her jabs, so we called round about a half dozen practices and although we didn't go with the cheapest we went with the one that had the best 'feel' to it and have never regretted it. I keep telling OH that we can't move because I won't change vets.

Shop around

Our vet charges £24 for the 1st set of jabs. Then £12 annually - this may have gone up slightly as we haven't taken any of our seven dogs to the vets since their boosters last year except to have one PTS which cost £25

Micro chips are OK IF all vets / resuce centres use the equipment to detect the chip and can be bothered. They can migrate from the original site and even get lost but do not cause the dog any problems.

BTW our vet is used by some of the top whippet show kennels in the UK and is not used primarily because he is cheap. He is interested in the animals he treats and is definitley NOT in it for the money.

k9 is the best place to ask questions but please dont rely on just one person's opinion however well intentioned that person is. Especially regarding neutering / removal of dew claws / coating / feeding / running free (in fact dont rely on one person for any information, read all comments and make your own decisions. BTW when is the 2nd whippet planned?

Even if the microchip migrates it can still be scanned, someone can easily remove a lost pups collar and tag, but they wouldnt be able to remove a chip- unless they are professional pup thiefs!

I just think they are quite a good idea- dog wardens have scanners, rescue homes do too and most vets should. These days you can get microchips which have a temperature sensor- so they dont need it insert a thermometer up the bum!

Cor :p wheres your vet then Dawn Do you think I would still save if i traveled

I,m very happy with my vet practice ,they are not the largest in town but I think them reasonable and know me and my dogs . I usually ask for the boss ,but have struck up a good rappor with some of the younger chaps :- "

If you were in the USa you could just do them yourself.

I just ordered my next lot of vaccines on line at a cost of $50 for 25 doses. (About 1 pound stirling each)

That's for the usual puppy shots and up to sixteen weeks and then annually or whatever you want.

You can also do Rabies under the guidence of a vet at a cost of about $5 each.

I have no idea why you can't do your own routine shots in the U.K. It's not difficult or even dangerous and the vet won't give you any guarantee that your dog won't come down with the very thing it'svaccinated against.

Micro chips are even easier to place. Not that difficult to remove either!

Don't know about insurance. Seems an awful lot to me, but then I think of dogs as animals not people.

If this is any help - North of Scotland, vaccinations £20 a time (2 jabs, 2 weeks apart for the first lot, annual if you wish thereafter). Neutering £65 male dogs (regardless of size), £120 female dogs (again, any size). Microchipping £27. Wormer £2/10kg, 3 times a year or dependent on results of faecal egg count@£15. Isurance varies, I recommend paying a few punds extra for a zero-excess policy, it pays for itself after a couple of upset tums or a stitch up. (shop around, PLEASE! and read the small print carefully - don't use E&L).

Get a vet you can build a rapport with and you will be likely to receive loads of free advice and support over the phone! :D

I mentioned on a different thread that my vets Vets 4 Pets do a charge of £60 for life on boosters and with 3 dogs thats going to save me heaps, if there is one near you they may do it not all of them do, but if they do they are also having a special offer on first vacs at the moment too.(not sure how much heard it on the radio)

I have to say my vet and the nurses are very nice at my practise so I take them there for everything but I wouldn't if I wasn't happy with them just because the boosters are cheap

It is worth paying a little more in my oppinion to be happy and comfortable with your vets if thats what it takes

I have no idea how much my vet charges for anything other than a call out that’s £40 I just pay and think it a fair price. But I love  my vet it’s a small practice she knows all the dogs and she cried a little when we had to put Aspen to sleep and sent 3 hand written cards last year when we lost the 3 dogs. I no my vet is much cheaper than some of my friends vet who are north of me in Dundee (Scotland)
