Vets Shave 11lb Matted Hair From Afghan

:( thats so sad ,how can people do these things poor baby hope he find a lovely home were he can be looked after properly :huggles:

That is criminal  BUT unfortunately its not a rarity :(

Many Affies who are lucky enough to go through Rescue are also in hideous states of neglect too :(

They are damned hard work to keep & take many many hours of grooming to keep them in tip top condition, yet some folk buy them & just think their coats will stay automatically beautiful & when they realise the extent of the work entailed they just cant be bothered

Thankfully there is not a big pet market for them anymore which is just as well

Hope this lad finds a loving caring home now :huggles:

you need to bath and groom a afghan every ten days.this poor afghan as been left for about eighteen months.i have been showing afghans for 32 years,i have never seen anythink like it,poor dog. :(

for 32 years and never seen anythink like it.poor dog

l love afghans and untill i am in a position where i can look after the coat properly i would never take on this breed if the owner couldnt cope with the coat they should never of had one

Omg look at him thats just pitiful, he looks like some sort

of mummy :(

It never ceases to amaze me what people can do to animals.

I hope he finds the best home ever he so deserves it

I agree afghans aren't for the faint hearted (w00t)

My boy is 8 months and from bathing to drying takes a good two hours....thats with his baby coat (w00t)

When he goes through the change of coat....and as he is my first....apparently it can be a nightmare

I started off using my own hair dryer....now have a blaster/dryer.

Use kitchen table...now have a grooming table....2nd hand

Always got OH to hold his head....now have a grooming arm...2nd hand

have asked around and hopefully getting a H frame next week...2nd hand

Use to carry him into a show so he wouldn't get wet...now have a trolley and crate....2nd hand

Knots can appear in a blink....but that poor affie had been neglected for a while.

There is no shame in clipping the coat if circumstances change and a person finds it difficult to manage.

BUT it is shameful to let it get that severely matted

Afghans are an amazing breed. They need to learn from a very early age that grooming is part of a routine....while watching the TV, I run my hands through his coat looking for knots, twigs, pieces of paper, dried mud, birds nests, cuddly toys (w00t) (w00t) (w00t) then we have a bit of a brush.

Sadly some people think the glamerous Afghan looks lovely lying on a well groomed lawn.....they forget the dog has hours of being groomed :sweating:

i have problems adding pics......plain thick i think :- "

oh my gosh - what a pitiful state that poor boy was in :(

I really can get on a soapbox about people who have a breed totally unsuitable for their lifestyle - why on earth would you have a dog with possibly one of the most high maintenance coats if you didn't want to spend the time looking after it?

or as jean said, clip the blummin thing - they don't care it they're all sleek and glossy and hairy, or short coated and funky!

My last cat was a persian, and she was hard enough work - daily grooming in the winter and in the summer i clipped her (mostly because she would get so hot that she didn't know what to do with herself!)

If i'm honest, I hadn't appreciated just how much work her coat would be - but that said, she didnt ask to be born with a coat she couldnt look after and she didnt ask to come live with me - so i got on with it and did a lot more brushing and detangling and twig removal than i ever thought i would be doing!. But she was my cat and as such i would do whatever i needed to in order to make her happy and comfortable. To have let her matt up would have been awful :(

When she died, I vowed never to have a long haired animal again - so its devon rexes and whippets all the way.....but while she was with me it was my RESPONSIBILITY to make sure I did for her what she needed me to....am just glad the poor affie boy has found people with the concern to sort him out

I adore Afghans but would never like having to cope with that coat. One of the reasons why I have a whippet, and I will continue to admire Afghans from afar. Why don't people THINK

What a poor soul, that is disgusting that a magnificent looking animal should end up looking like that :( Hope he finds the loving , caring home he deserves with an abundance of love.

I used to have an afghan when I was little called Reuben. My mum was always getting stopped in the street by passers by commenting on how beautiful he was kept :))

UNBELIEVABLE CRUELTY

I think the chances of the owner coming forward are pretty much nil (w00t) .. and if they did there would probably by a lynching mob waiting for them  Presumably the poor lad wasn't microchipped either :(

I know sometimes circumstances can mean that a dog escapes or gets lost and can suffer until they are found but the extent of the neglect to poor Alfie is so gross that he must have been kept by someone until they finally kicked him out

Thank goodness they did .... at least he now has a chance of a knowledgeable and kind forever home :huggles:

GOOD LUCK ALFIE - YOU'RE A BEAUTIFUL BOY  :luck: :luck:
