went down the vets last night and there was a jrt in for a op it had got some small bones stuck in its gut and she was bleeding in side. she had lost a lot of blood and it was touch and go if she will be allright this morning.

PLEASE BE CAREFULL WHEN YOU GIVE DOGS BONES

:cheers: Elaine Lorraine this was one of the reasons we stopped giving the dogs chicken wings, we used to give them one each for there breakfasts, one day we gave them to them took them racing came back washed them off, making there tea i heard some retching sound and meg coughed up a slintered piece of chicken wing bone, it was very sharp and to think of the damage that could of been done, i just stopped them straight away and saved them for the ferrets.

I've never had any trouble with chicken wings or sharpe bits of bone with Inca...she chews and chews the wings til its almost mush...it looks and sounds :x but she loves them.

ONLY RAW BONES should be given to dogs NEVER COOKED BONES...if giving marrow type bones make sure there is plenty of meat on them so any bone that comes of with the meat goes down with it, once the meat has been eaten from the bone it should be taken away.

I know its probably been said before but cooked bones splinter when they are chewed by the dogs.

Raw bones if chewed and not swallowed break up easily because they soft and easily digested.

i lost a dobie with same thing some time ago.he lingered for a long time too but he never fully recovered.i didnt give him bones that splintered i gave him large ham hock (big round ones that cant be chewed)but he chewed tiny little pieces of bone which ended up blocking his intestine and caused an intuseption (sp)his intestine telescoped and blood supply was cut off and the flesh died causing poisoning.he lived but didnt have much of a life for the rest of the time he was alive.id NEVER give any bones cooked or raw ever again.

To add to what Hellybobs said - they should always be non-weight bearing bones if they are having them as part of their diet. I only give wings and ribs - they have large beef bones, for recreation only - there is no way they could take off large chunks of these.

I have always fed bones as have my family and never had a problem - but I would say I am pretty careful about what they have.

Hope the jrt will be ok.

I dont put whole chicken wings or thighs down for Annie or Alf as I don't trust either of them to chew them up small enough, Annie is like a ganet at feeding time and used to try to swallow huge pieces which was a bit scarey. So now I cut them up myself to be certain they are small pieces and cannot do any harm. Chicken bones are fairly soft and I can manage to cut through them with a very good pair of kitchen scissors, if I cannot cut through that piece of bone it goes in the bin.

It hardly touches the sides.

Thats exactly what I do...cut the wings up into pieces but I have to say Inca does chew, its Dippy that I have to watch and make sure she doesn't inhale cos she is really greedy.

went into the vets again to night. the JTR is still very poorly she had eaten LAMB BONES THE VET SAID THEY WHERE VERY SMALL BONES as well, but there was a lot of them. they had made a right mess of her GUT.

Did the vet whether they were cooked bones or raw ones??

thanks hun,it was pretty awful he didnt chew off big pieces just little chips hardly bigger than a matchhead.but they somehow just got stuck in his intestine and they piled up,my vet said it was like dropping pebbles down a drainpipe,and one sticks,then another,and another,and thats what caused it.not a big piece, but lots of tiny pieces.i also used to feed pet minced chicken untill i had a similar thing happen to a litter of pups,when i looked at the minced up chicken there was tiny pieces of bone in that too so i soon stopped feeding that.im paranoid about them now,i know lots of folk give their dogs bones and i guess it must be ok, :unsure: but if you had seen how blake suffered and what he went through im sure youd understand my paranoia :huggles:

I can understand what your saying Kris...you've had a really bad experience and it takes it out of you...after all you lost your much loved pet and I know exactly how that feels

GOOD NEWS i have been to the vets again tonite, and the JRT is doing fine, it is nearly out of the wood. :huggles: i will keep you up dated about her.
