Do any of you own Victoria Stilwell's book 'It's Me or the Dog'? She's the lady that does that really good channel 4 show of the same name. It's just that the book is £15.99 new, so I want to make sure it's A1 for training and handling tips before I buy it.

OR can any of you recommend me a really good, and easy to follow dog/puppy training book please?

I want to be prepared

Many many thanks.

although its not strictly a "training book" i would recommend...

dominance"fact or fiction""Explores the relationship between a domestic dog and his owner, by arguing a case against a dog wanting to raise his status over his owner and arguing against 'pack rules'. "

Barry Eaton

imo its very good as an insight into the way your dog thinks which is obviously the basis of any training you will do together

personally i think it is excellent

The book I've found quite helpfull this time around is 'The Perfect Puppy' by Gwen Bailey, published by Hamlin £12.99. It starts from the very beginning (choosing your pup etc), and covers the stages of developement as well as kind training methods, and simple explanations about behaviour and the dogs view of the world.

I'd definitely recommend it :)

It's great that you're preparing yourself well in advance, you'll be so pleased you did when you finally get your bundle of fun....it's important to understand about pack mentality for your dog's sake, and it definitely makes for a happier puppy if you've done your homework and have a good grasp of where he's coming from  :luck:

yup, I'd go with that choice too

Although, I'd still be tempted to splash out on Victoria too. I keep thinking that I'd like that book. My OH just thinks he'd like to get VS herself and subject her to some 'training'... :- "

the place where i take my dogs training recommends gwen bailey....i have 3 of her books and they are good....i also have victorias book but im not that keen if im honest...nothing new in it really imo

I think Gwen Bailey's book is fantastic couldn't recommend it more highly. Also should mention one of her other books 'Puppy School', which, while I don't think it is such a good book, it DOES have pictures of our Tess in it so is obviously the best book in the world :D .

I have Victoria's book, and have found it very interesting. Focuses a lot on "dog psychology" in the first half, thinking how a dog thinks etc, and the 2nd half has a lot on basic training, bringing up puppy etc. I think it’s especially good if you haven’t owned a dog before, although I can see how more experienced people could think it nothing new. I'd definitely recommend it :)

Great suggestions. Thanks so much :D

I'll start with the Gwen Bailey book I think, as it seems the most highly thought of.

It looks like I'll learn a lot by just reading the backlog of posts on this forum too -- it's really good to connect with people who have so much experience and know-how.

We have both those books and recommend either, still refer to them loads when my two start to stray of the training process. Got VS book off ebay for £9.00 and perfect puppy from amazon for about £7.00, well worth the money.... I love a bargain. :- "
