My uncle has a virus on his computer and it keeps dialling up to the internet etc, and putting porn pop-ups all over the screen. He's turned it off and unplugged the telephone socket - but he's at a bit of a loss what to do. I said I'd ask around and ask what other people use to clean the machine and start everything working properly again.

Any suggestions?

The simpler and easier to explain the better as I'll have to do this over the phone because they're the other end of the country :b

Have pm'd you, but here is some advice.

Couple of suggestions:

1. Call PC World and ask them how much for a system health check and clean out

2. Get a hold of some anti-spyware programs (ADAWARE, SPYBOT) and clean the machine that way.

Number 1 is the simplest, but may cost £50.

Number 2 is harder to be done by yourself, but cost nothing but your time.

If he is not too PC Literate, NO 1 is the best option.

Also:

Get a firewall, anti-virus software and spy checking software. (Norton Internet Security should do it)

Find out the number that is getting dialled (will be a premium rate number) and ask BT to block it.

Helen, you could try going into 'Add and Remove programmes' and see if it's in there. You'll need to know the programmes name. I've had a couple of little nasty's that add themselves to this list but once you locate them they're easy to remove :thumbsup:

Hi Helen I had this problem a while back :b if you go into "Tools" and click onto "internet options" then click onto "connections" there will be a list of dial out locations.

The list should only contain his internet providers name like freeserve, NTL, or whatever :thumbsup: I suspect your uncle has one called Sexy porn or something like that in his list

If you delete the dodgy ones from this list and then click on the option that says "never dial a connection" this will stop it in future from automatically connecting if it happens again :thumbsup:

But he does also need to get decent adware, spyware and anti virus programs as well :thumbsup:

Also warn your uncle to expect a hefty phone bill as the dodgy connection would have been to a premium rate number (w00t)

Hi Helen, whats happened is they have visited a site that has set a dialer up on the PC,

get them to go into internet options, delet cookies, delet files, check the connections tab and if the dialers there delet it and check in ad & remove programmes as well.

get a spyware programme such as Adaware (i've got adaware pro if you want a copy of it) run that and delet all files found.

then instale an AV programme and run that this should sort the problem.

lastly to stop the pop ups get a pop up stopper I use Panicwares pop up stopper pro (again if you want a copy let me know i'll do you one.

Ive got AV(as advised by a few people on K9) and it sorted mine out Helen. I have Spyware too and Firewall. Not as many problems and we had before. :thumbsup: Good Luck hope they soon have it sorted - its so annoying when it happens. :rant:
