I think Piriton (Chlorphenamine) belongs to a particular, older group of antihistamines.  The newer human varieties which have been introduced work slightly differently I think, to prevent the drowsiness that was always a problem for hay fever sufferers on the older antihistamines.
I'm no pharmacist/vet or anything though so I might be wrong.

Yes, I've only taken Piriton once and never again! It completely knocked me out. So I only have the non-drowsy ones in the house - looks like I ought to go out and buy some Piriton then, just in case.

Poor Zak!!  The wasps up here are really dopey atm and of course that's when they are at their worst.  Rifle was stung last year on his right b*****k poor thing, Piriton took the swelling down quite quickly but he did have a funny walk for a day or two!
My poor Kai was stung on his winkie too.Was walking like John Wayne for a few days :D

I cant take Piriton as I am allergic to it for some reason. Jai was om an anti-hestamine last year for a while because of an allergy to food. I cant remember which one but it was also usable be humans.

Be careful to buy Piriton (Chlorphenamine maleate) rather than Piriteze (cetirizine) too. (I can only take Piriton as all the non-drowsy types cause me really bad racing-pulse symtoms; I did once make this mistake and ended up having an ecg as a result :b ).
