It is with such great sorrow that I have to tell you all that my little Sam was pts yesterday at the grand old age of 15 years and 10 months. He got a gastric infection last week and despite being on a drip, antibiotics and so on, was just not strong enough to pull through. So to save his (and my) suffering, the decision was made. I must thank my wonderful vet Neil Saviill for his sympathetic approach and Roy Winrow for driving us to and from the surgery.
He was such a tough little dog. I have been looking at his racing record and see that in his first five year's racing he reached 46 Finals, winning 14 of them and three Supremes. As a Veteran he got into 39 Finals, winning 11 and 4 Supremes. He was a bend specialist and won his half-coat and title on bends. He sired three litters, WCRCh Gene Genie and WCRCh Steadfast being his best offspring. The highlight of his career in my mind was his Supreme win at the Independent beating Gracious and Ballistic Bunny!
His sister WCRCh/VC Serena is still going strong. It would be interesting to know if there are any other Striker offspring still alive - Ballistic Bunny is one I know.
So the Rankin household is a bit subdued today and I am reminded of part of a poem by Kipling that reads:-
"Brothers and sisters I bid you beware
of giving your heart to a dog to tear."
On a more cheerful note, Sam's great grand son Quiver arrives in three week' time. Something to look forward to .............
