Hi,

Used to come on here a few years ago. When i was looking for a puppy.

My female whippet is small, about 17-17 1/2, and weighs 14.4 kg. Just had her weighed at the vets. I know she is too fat but what should she weigh? She has just turned 4 years old.

I've seen about 22lb for the lower end of scale. She is over 31 pounds, so she needs to loose 9lb. That seems a lot. I was thinking maybe 4 or 5lb, gauging her by feel.

We don't race her, but she does agility, just started to go again after winter break.

Just want to know what is a healthy weight, not worried about getting her overly skinny.

Thanks

At 31lbs she is rather over weight for her size. All dogs are different though and I judge mine on what they look like, so if we could see a photo of her that might help

To put it in perspective my 20.5" dog is 32lbs and he is a beautiful healthy weight, he gets a lot of exercise and doesn't put on weight easily.

His litter sister is just shy of 19" an although I'm not sure exactly how much she weighs I would guess a good 6 or 7lbs less than him.

Unfortunately I don't have any standing photos to hand - the only one I have is this of Ruby!

It is very hard to judge whether a dog is overweight or not without seeing them but as a rule of thumb I prefer mine to be well covered but to just be able to see the last two ribs & a "hint" of their pin bones.

It does sound as though she is a good bit overweight for her size as my show males are around that weight and they are 20ins (maybe one is slightly smaller) whereas our working dog is just over 22ins & is almost 16kgs.

Thanks for replies,
I need to take a recent photo and upload. I need hubbie to help with that, so will post tomorrow. Like most whippets, she does love her food, mainly ours.

I have stopped giving her scraps and all she gets now is her raw meat (nature's menu complete raw) buy frozen and defrost and her mixer, which i'm now measuring, plus a vermex biscuit (herbal dewormer). She doe

s like to find food outside though, we have several take away places near us, and people discard food. She got a taste for chips, not good. I don't want to muzzle her though.

one of my girls is approx 18 1/2 " and was weighed at the vets after her season when she needed to loose a bit of weight and she was 12.2 kg

Lots of free running chasing her ball and a light diet and she looks a lot better - i will get her weight checked again soon
