Hi! All, Hubby says not enough pictures of lovely dogs from shows, are you allowed to take them?

This has been a bit of a sore point Lesley. A while ago someone/a number of people? kicked up a stink (not publicly on the board though) that photos of their dog/dogs were taken and posted on the board - they weren't happy with the pic/s and didn't believe that we had a right to post pics of their dogs without permission.

It has been discussed at length about whose rights are what in regard to photos. My personal opinion is that no-one on here is going to purposefully take a shocker photo and post it just to be horrible. The way I see it is there are lots of people interested to see what dogs are the winners and it's free publicity for the owner so why knock it? And we ALL know that photos can lie so we don't take every photo as the be all and end all for that dog.

However because the board copped a bit of flack about it - most people are very reserved now in what pics they post. It's a shame especially for those of us interested to see what's out there on the other side of the world.

Thanks for that Aslan, I have a lot to learn I just thought everybody would be proud to show their dogs off :clown: and we all love pics don't we.

One of the best aspects of this board over the past 12 months or so has been the wonderful range of pics put up of dogs right around the world. For us in Australia it has been great to look at dogs and bloodlines that we read used to only read about. It's also been great to spy some of the interesting sights in the background of pics- that Castle was fabulous( Was it Windsor Castle??). It would be a great shame if this stopped.

Ok this is my two pennorth. Speaking as an Open Show Secretary, the Kennel Club have rules about the taking of photos (and videos) at a show.

Basically, you are not allowed to take photographs whilst judging is in progress, but it's okay when the judge is writing their critique, provided you ask first, but generally, if you're in the line up, people are fine about it. However, if you take photographs outside this context, you must ask the owners permission and also ensure that they have no objection to it being aired in the 'public domain', in other words published in any medium, in which the owner has not been approached for permission to publish.

The use of flash when taking pictures is another sensitive area and on this I can speak personally, as many dogs can be put off by the use of flash. One of my dogs will panic completely when flash is used, which is one reason why any photographs you may see of him in a show pose are always outside! If he has been subject to flash, even though it may not be anything to do with him, and he hasn't been in the ring, there is no point in me taking him in as he will shake like the very divil, expecting another flash to happen.

I think it is a basic courtesy that if you take a picture of someone else's dog, they should be asked if it's okay first.

I love to see pictures that have been posted and will certainly be putting up some of the pups (once I have mastered the digital camera I have just bought!), for the simple reason that I am very proud of what Darby and Joan (BJ and Asharna) have produced.

Hope this answers the question asked.

Among the Rules & regs. in the Crufts schedule it reads:

Filming & flash photography is allowed from outside the rings at all times unless the operation of the camera is actually affecting exhibits. (for private use only)

I have posted a lot of phot's on this site and most of them have been well recieved , I take them at shows and lure courseing events , If Im' happy with them I will post them . I certanly do not go out of my way to take a bad photo of any ones dog and if I have I do not post it. The person who takes the photo is the one who has copyright . Usaly I give the photo I have taken to the person who's dog it is when I see them at the next show I attend I don't ask any money for them, I'm not a professional photogapher out to make money and if I did charge it would only be to cover costs.

Up to now nobody has complained to me about takeing photos of dog's at shows but then it's mostly people I know who I take them of unless some ones askes and I hope when I attend them next year it stays that way. :D

I say keep up the good work Billy Blue Eyes!! I have no problem with people taking photos of my dogs, as I have said before, and I don't believe the majority of people do either.

As for flashes disturbing exhibits .......... well, I think this is an entirely different subject. It comes along with people scrapping chairs, banging cages, dropping things, other dogs barking etc, etc. It is not other people's problems if you have a nervy dog and you can't expect people to tiptoe around at a public event, which is what a dog show is. It is up the owner to train the dog and get it over its nerves or not bother showing it. And before you all jump up and down, one of mine is a bit of a wuss, so I know what it is like but I accept that some things may disturb her at shows and I am afraid she has to get on with life, I can't be doing with pussyfooting around her all the time. But that is just my opinion!!

I too put alot of photo`s on from various shows . and I ALWAYS try to put the dog looking its best , sometimes the handler is the one spoiling the shot !

I agree with Dessie  you cant `pussy foot ` around at shows otherwise all dogs would be nervous recks i, its up to us to solcialise them correctly ,

My dogs fortunatley `love` having their picture taken and hide as soon as I get the camera out :- "

I take photos at shows so I can put them on K9 for other folks around the world can see our `top dogs `, and if possible like BBE i send them a copy . usually via Email ( cheaper) !!

Ive had no complaints` yet` about taking and putting on here ( apart from DG :- " ) but thats sorted

Re that quote from Dessie. The dog in question was at the time being shown on the table and because of rough handling from a judge, ended up with the EXHIBIT being pushed off the table, resulting in dislocated fingers for the handler as well as cuts and bruises for the dog, which just also happened to be around the same time as some idiot was using flash, I can well understand why the exhibit does not like flash. In future please don't making sweeping generalisations when you aren't aware of the facts.

Am I angry and upset about the comments, you bet I am.

Oh and I forgot to say that prior to that incident the exhibit was bombproof!

:( I don't think Dessie was getting at you personally Jan......... just making a sweeping comment about showing. I do understand how you feel though. I had the same thing happen to one of my bitches but it wasn't a flash it was cage being dropped, put the bitch off for life. Shes now happy as a family pet, but we can't ban cages from shows, its just life !!

I used to post a lot of photos on this site, thinking that many would get enjoyment from them......how wrong, my photo taking made the breed notes. Not quite what I wanted........ so I don't take them no more !!

 Just thought I'd add my thoughts from Oz where there are (as far as Queensland goes) no rules about photo's being taken from outside of the ring. But there are rules about distracting or interferring with an exhibit that is being judged.

It is always very upsetting when something happens to upset/frighten an exhibit especially when it is on the table, though from what a gather more than one thing happened to upset the dog but unfortunately an association with the flash for fear was initiated. Just as a thought do any advanced ringcraft classes make use of a flash so that dogs can become used to it with positive reinforcement?

Janfiers, just wondering if retraining was tried with a flash to help the exhibit or not and if so what was the outcome?

I was at a show once when someone tried to flash. (w00t) But it was soooo cold that he could only descripe himself.

I think his name was Angus, or Agnes, or Angel, oh well spoke with a funny accent anyway. o:)

 LOVE IT LOL  (w00t) (w00t)

I wont post apicture of anyones dog now, cant be bothered to ask if they would mind -_- . This does not include people on here as I know they know me well enough to trust me to put on a good one or not at all.

I too loved seeing the winners on here and if others are not so keen then so be it, their loss.

We try not to worry at all about bangs and flashes at shows, its just tough. BUT Polly is a bit worried now after Richmond, I guess she will settle after a while. Unfortunatly our ringcraft doesnt do flapping aluminum tenting (w00t)

I have no problem with K9'ers posting pics of any of my girls. It's ME I hate to share photos of!

And yes - I'm not quite sure how to train for the Richmond type tents!

Wendy

Thanks for clearing that up for me folks, I think  I take that many photos of mine I think they would be upset if there weren't any flashes going on

Anyway forget the dogs lets have a picture of Angus :p
