Honey's not coming with us this weekend after all. :(

Bit of background; Stepdad booked the trip away for himself, mum, his son, my nieces, my aunt, and her eldest two grandkids. I wasn't going, but it's 25mins up the road and back when I could work, I had clients in that area, so I didn't exactly have FOMO.

Then my mum started feeling guilty that my 19 year old nephew wasn't going - especially when his younger sisters started getting excited and talking to him about it. Cue Auntie Linz stepping in and agreeing to go halfers on a second caravan with mum; good intentions and all that. My mistake was to leave it to mum to book it up; she didn't book a pet-friendly caravan. We've tried to work around it, to see if we could change it for a pet-friendly one (all booked up, understandably), looked into seeing if the first caravan is pet-friendly and pay for the deep-clean ... but it would mean that mum and stepdad would end up in the second caravan when they've paid for an upgrade to a van with a balcony, and that's not fair.

So my cousin is having both Honey and Kaylus. The good thing is, they're both staying at home, in their own environment, and cousin is sleeping here, and I can be back home in less than half an hour if anything goes wrong, and, I suppose, I can enjoy myself with my family, instead of being restricted to dog-friendly areas.

But . . .

Like you say you're only up the road if the pull of your 'but...' gets too strong! Wishing you a happy break:)

For work trips Penny stays home with OH and mopes. She apparently acts pitiful but it's hard to tell how much is her being dramatic and how much is OH embellishing how dramatic Penny is LOL!

For any other trip she comes with us. She's an excellent traveller and I've recently learned that she's also totally settled if we leave her in a strange place as long as she has her bed and crate.

The next adventure is going to be to see if she can handle flying. She's small enough to come in the cabin with the right documentation. She has proven me wrong on everything I thought she wasn't going to be able to handle, so I'm not going to make any assumptions about how she would handle a flight.

The only thing I'm unsure about is if I should sedate her as a matter of course, or see if she's fine without sedation. Everything I research seems to lean towards sedating but if she doesn't need it...??? IDK.

Penny is such a little trooper :)

Re sedating her for the flight, that's a hard one, but my thought is probably best to do so, as if you find she needs it, it'll be a lot harder, if not impossible to do so once onboard.

I would also have a trial run of the sedative before you go, as some dogs can feel stressed just because they don't feel quite normal.

The "but" happened.

Woke up this morning to a text from my cousin saying that she was woken up by a fight between Honey and Kaylus, a bit of blood on the sheets and a tea towel. Phoned her straight away to ask how she (Honey) was. She said she was fine, but in her bed, and Kay was keeping his distance. I packed up and my stepdad brought me home. Phoned the emergency vet "for advice"; their advice? Bring her in. They've clipped her hair (she's a diva, so they must have heard her screaming from the far side of the waiting room  ) and she has 4 superficial puncture wounds. Antibiotics for a week and pain relief if she needs it, but she's fine and I'm home a day early and waiting for a takeaway for my lunch.

Given the lack of wounds, I think Kaylus was playing a bit too rough and it got out of hand.

I'm sorry your break has been cut short, but I'm sure I'd have done the same thing.

And, good that you weren't far away.

I hope there's no lasting effects.

Oh no Linz! I'm so sorry!
Have Honey and Kay had any issues before?
I hope Honey heals up quickly and your nerves heal up too!

Thanks O2. Great to see you here. :D

She's eating and drinking and had her first half-tablet of her antibiotic in banana and now chilling on her bed looking alert and probably hoping for her walk.

They've had the odd handbags moment, but not to the point of bloodshed... but then I keep them separated overnight just in case this scenario happened. With everything else I had to remember and pass on, I completely forgot to mention it to my cousin, so it's my fault. I was going to leave written instructions, but everything happened so quickly in the run-up to departure that it slipped my mind.

Strangely enough, my nerves are fine - at least at the moment they are. My stepdad even remarked that my cousin would be more shaken up by it than I was. Whether it's a delayed reaction, or whether it's because I knew it was play aggression that got a little out of hand, maybe time will tell. I do know that in future, I'll go back to separating them.

I'm sorry your break has been cut short, but I'm sure I'd have done the same thing.

Thanks Jo. I'm not too cut up about coming home early from the holiday, to be honest. It was nice in the caravan, with my nephew and I chatting over our shared passions of creative writing and reading, but at the original caravan, it's been one drama after another and we've all been drawn into it all. Even my mum is talking about cutting the holiday short.

But yes, I am glad I was just up the road, so apart from a bit of traffic build-up at the Tunnel, we got home very quickly. :)

So sorry to hear what happened with Honey and Kay Linz, glad to hear Honey's wounds are only superficial, hope the antibiotics do their job and she heals without any issues.

How is Kay?

Hope this won't cause any issues between them.

(They need their handbags confiscated ;))

Thanks, FW. Yeah, me too. I'll keep them separated for a few days and let the stress levels come down and then try careful reintroductions.

Kay's busy head-rubbing my laptop and prowling around the living room with his tail high like he owns the place, so I'm not too worried about him. Especially not when Honey is literally half his weight and she's toothless, so the damage she could inflict on him is minimal.

Aw, I'm sorry this has happened and that Honey is fine. It's good that you're feeling calm, so Honey won't pick up any anxiety.

So sorry to hear about this spat! Hopefully everyone is recovering and settling back down now. At least you were close by and not a plane ride away...

That's a difficult one . perhaps chat to the vet , a mild one? If she were traveling cargo I would definitely say no .

ETA just read the replies and the consensus is try the sedative before you go which is sound advice,
