Hi All

I'm sure this is a common asked question but what are you all feeding your Whippets on at the moment due to the choice we have now at the shops

Regards

Whipmaz xxxxx

Usually raw or Fishmongers 60% white fish kibble (which is grain free)

CJS for my oldies plus some raw, the odd sprat, raw, amy left over cooked veg or meat. The two that race, Skinners 23, any raw I can get, lamb ribs, chicken necks and carcasses plus left overs. They also get raw sprats and anything else going.

I've tried many different foods but mine are now fed Lily's Kitchen. It's a super food and the boys have never looked healthier.

Butcher's tinned tripe assorted mix, with left over veg/scraps. Fish once/twice a week and small amount of milk after "dinner". Lots of chewy bones. Jacques` coat gleams and his motion is small and firm.

Over the years we have fed raw tripe (phew!) and assorted dog foods but what we use now is convenient for us and seems OK for him.

The behaviourist said on no account touch dried dog food and then went into it's make up in minut detail - ugh!

Totally agree which is why we went on to Lily's

I have had mine on Burgess Supadog sensitive (both lamb & Rice & Salmon & rice) Mix in half a tin of pedigree Chum or Butchers Tripe with each meal between 3 of them. They love it and are really fit and well. Very simple food with one protein & 1 carbohydrate (rice). Daisy gets Nature's Harvest with Duck as she requires a special diet for her LPE. She is now tolerating a handful of JWB Duck & rice which gives her a bit of crunch that she loves.

Mine tend to stick to Raw mince beef and some chicken wings, occasional biscuits too...and treats...also their bedtime carrot of course...

...oh and little Daisy gets cooked chicken...human grade...hand fed to her in bed of course...

Tilly has been on Burns complete since we got her six years ago but I also give her oily fish (sardines are her favourite). She is the perfect pooer with a beautiful glossy coat and very fit with tremendous stamina, in spite of only three legs. Gracie and Milo are both on Royal Canin and I have tried very slowly changing them but Gracie always has terrible bottom explosions. They also have sardines and, again, they are very fit, with lovely coats and no tummy troubles. I have checked the ingredients of both their Burns and RC foods and nothing nasty is listed ie bulkers or derivatives.

I think checking ingredients whether you feed kibble or wet food is the most sensible thing to do... there are some great dry foods with no fillers/ preservatives and some good wet foods too. Equally there are crap versions of both. Meat or fish should be the main ingredient in either. Wheat, maize etc should be avoided if possible, and there should be no colour/ preservatives :)

I also look for whether it says meat or fish derivatives and avoid those a well.

meat & fish predominately raw but also cooked when needed (heart liver)

I know the raw versus everything else debate rages on and, without getting into that, I was interested to see Masta's photographs. Do you feed bones (raw obviously) ie chicken wings, lamb ribs? If you do, have you really never had a problem with any of your dogs having one stuck in their throat or gut or even a dog just coughing until it sorts itself out?

Many thanks for all your replies

Looking at the pictures in the above reply wish I was I Whippet! Ha ha

What brand of dry foods are you all feeding I am in the process of changing my lot over to Skinners (any good)

Raw tripe, raw beef/lamb heart, raw beef mince, raw turkey chunks all with a cube of raw blended vegetables. Due to the rising cost of meat we now add a small amount of mixer biscuit. Chicken wings, sardines, tuna. Tinned Butchers Tripe as a treat now and again. And Burns Fish and Brown Rice. Just like with us I think variety is the key!

yes i feed chicken wings and carcass, and i have never had a problems in fact i feed bones from 4 weeks old mainly rib you have to ask the simple question if dogs were prone to choking on bones why do so many feed them??

I know what you are saying but we had a labrador years ago that choked and died on a bone (raw not cooked) and that has left me paranoid about giving my dogs bones. My vet (and dog owner of a giant schnauzer and black labrador) refuses to feed bones because of the amount of raw fed dogs that she sees with bones splintered and stuck either in the mouth, throat or gut. :( Btw, lovely looking pups  , is that a solid white on the right hand side?

' Horses for Course's"

Yes it is a solid white

Ours have mince from the butchers, cooked: Cooked chicken taken off the bone and chopped: once or twice a week scrambled eggs: sometimes pilchards: all these mixed with chopped and boiled vegetables, porridge in he morning and pasta at night. They also have small colour and preservative-free biscuits (Co-op) as a treat between meals. I do not feed rice now as it appears that Eric has an intolerance. He has had several bouts of severe gut problems - we almost lost him at New Year - but since making sure that he has no rice whatsoever he has been fine. I keep a few tins of Butchers Tripe for the girls, just in case I am unable to cook one day.

I don't cook for mine - instead I feed her nature diet mixed with harringtons biscuits. All free from preservatives etc etc. Seems to last well and doesn't cost too much and she's happy on it! Took her to the vet for her booster and the vet said she was doing really well so hopefully it'll keep working out :)
