I think it is very important to appoint somebody to deal with thing like these. People die in accidents every day, and families may be rather preocupied. I therefore always have 2 friends named in my will to take care of my animals if I get killed or just not be able to care for them for a while. I also used to have 2 guardians for my daughter, when she was young. I think it is very important to leave clear instructions, just in case :)

Many years ago parents of 2 young children were killed in a car accident, the kids badly injured. The extended family just hovered around the hospital, nobody thought of dogs kept in kennel runs on these people's country property. By the time they did remeber (matter of couple of days) half the dogs were dead, it was middle of heat wave and they ran out of water.

(w00t) OMG (w00t) Are you telepathic ? cos mine would be coming to you

BTW if you are thinking of popping your clogs before me :- " and Callie, Sienna, Spry and Kane come to me don't forget I'll need your van as well

The will won't be read immediately. It's important (especially if you don't live with other people) that you tell some people where your dogs should be sent (personal relation/friend, breeder, breed rescue, etc)

Do any of the services for relocating pets and owners such as Keepsafe and PetLog (for microchipped dogs) also keep a record of where dogs should be sent if their owners have died - or are unavailable for any other reason?

Whippet rescue was mentioned; I suppose other breed rescues will help for other breeds. Assuming they can find kennels or foster homes in an immediate emergency situation? What if you have two dogs of different breeds who are used to being together. Say you have a dalmation and a whippet-cross. Will dalmation rescue take the two as a pair? Will whippet rescue take on a whippet-type lurcher rather than a purebred whippet?

If you want to leave some financial provision for caring for your animals, I expect it must be left to a specific named individual or organisation. Ziloot, can you tell us anything about how you have covered this angle?

I don't need to turn down a drink next time we come for coffee do I  :sweating:

I'm kinda hoping my cousin would have the boys .... but I guess I really ought to check that out with him!

Getting a friend to do the immediate looking after is something I hadn't thought of - and something I really should .... I can definately imagine the family doing the rallying round the hospital thing and dealing with all the arrangements and everyone forgetting that the boys are needing looking after

But they ABSOLUTLEY MUST stay together, that is the most important thing - cant think what it would do to them if they lost me and each other at teh same time.

*scurry's off to think about wills*

This is something we have talked about a lot, but never actually got round to doing anything about it. We keep saying we should make wills but it seems so morbid :( I did get as far as getting a Canine Care Card from the Dogs Trust but that's all.

They say they will find homes for your dogs but it needs to be set up with a lawyer so probably something to do when doing the wills. Also the cynic in me says, will they really rehome the dogs as promised

I know one of my friends would have Raffy as the whole family love him but my girls would need an active/agility type home.

Oh Gawd, now I'm really depressed :(   Pass the wine bottle & turn up the Leonard Cohen..........

WHO'S LEONARD COHEN?

There aren't any people i know and trust to have all my dogs if i suddenly died. Obviously my daughter would take a few, but other than that none and i wouldn't want them in rescue. I think i would just want them to be put to sleep.

I honestly dont know of anyone id put my trust in to have my 2 should i kick the bucket, and to be honest with you i think the pair of em wouldnt be far behind me, why, well im not blowing my trumpet here, but jill n sally adore me as i adore them, they are my life, they follow me around from room to room, they rely on me for everything, and they get everything, should one of em go before me, then that would send me even further round the bend, and now, they want walkies, so walkies it is

forgot its footy shortly, they will have to wait

keith
