Hi - I have a lurcher (now 13) who is a greyhound x bordercollie. I have always thought that a lurcher was a sighthound x working dog....... 

If that is the case then why are we now seeing so many lurchers that are bull x's? They really do not fit the classic lurcher look!

 

I am sure many will have an opinion....please be kind to me

Now i may be wrong but i have always been led to believe if you follow the blood lines back havnt most if not all greyhounds and whippets got bull blood in them ?

No your totally right with the greyhounds not sure about whippets, the racing fraturnity put the bull blood in as they were getting to fine and if i am not mistaken as well on this matter i think saluki blood was put in the greyhounds too, to produce the stayers :thumbsup:

In the late 80's/early90's Salukis were unfortunately crossed with Greyhounds to produce LONGDOGS, for Coursing, however I have to disagree that if you follow the pedigrees of Racing & Coursing G reyhounds back, Saluki blood was not used. I have been involved with Salukis since 1967 & pedigrees are a hooby of mine & yes I am a Saluki purist, but whatever other people do that is up to them.

The breeder of my original Lurchers - the infamous Dave Thorne ( see Lambourne Lurchers) was anti saluki blood necause of their negative traits, as he said it takes 10 mins to put the blood in & at least 10 generations to breed it out-

As he said SIGHTHOUND X SIGHTHOUND = LONGDOG

LURCHER X OTHER = LURCHER

There is no doubt about it that over the last 15yrs it has become fashionable for people to cross ANY breed with a Greyhound to produce a dog for their requirements, it is their choice - The English Dictionary definition of a Lurcher is Greyhound x Collie.

An uncle of mine 76yrs always reckoned that a lurcher was a sighthound crossed with a collie,sighthound to sighthound being called a longdog,sorry something i will always stick with.
