Are birds supposed to eat mushroom toadstool things?

The birds round here apparently think its food ...........

Some do... but could it have been slugs and snails having a nibble?

Maybe, if slugs and snails can leave beak marks in the top of the mushroom toadstool thing, little triangle shapes like something's been pecking at it

Don't want to be taking away any food source for birdies

This is what Google AI has to say - not that I have great faith in Google AI, but... 'Many animals in the UK eat wild mushrooms, including mammals, insects, and even some birds. Squirrels, voles, and wood mice are known to forage for mushrooms on the forest floor, while badgers and foxes also consume fungi. Additionally, various insects like beetles, slugs, and fungus gnats rely on mushrooms as a food source.'

So possibly birds, but the marks of some animals may look similar. I think it's unlikely that cats would eat a harmful fungus - mushroom poisoning in cats is very rare, and of course many cats wander way beyond their owners' gardens. So whether you try to keep your garden fungus-free probably depends on how risk averse you are. Personally I wouldn't worry about it (dogs are more likely to eat fungus, but mine never did despite often walking in areas where it was prevalent).
