What defines a dog as a lurcher? I have recently got my whippet x, Willow and have had few people comment on my "lurcher".

So what breeding etc makes a dog a lurcher?

Strictly speaking a lurcher is a sighthound (greyhound, whippet, saluki, wolfhound etc) crossed with another working breed such as a collie or terrier, though nowadays 'lurcher' tends to get used for any sighthound cross.

A cross between two sighthounds is a 'longdog', but generally people would call these lurchers as well.

THIS IS A HARD ONE A LOT OF PEOPLE ONLY CLASS A COLLIEXGREYHOUND AS THE TRUE LURCHER, I HAVE 5 WORKING DOGS ONLY 2 I WOULD CLASS AS LURCHERS FIRST IS CEE JAY 3/4 BEARDIE 1/4 GREYHOUND, AND FLO SHE IS LINE BRED WITH COLLIEXBEDLINGTONX GREYHOUND THEN MY OTHER 2 YOUNG DOGS ARE 7/8GREYHOUNDX1/8DEERHOUND, I CLASS THEM AS RUNNING DOGS, AND LAST DAISY 1/2BEDLINGTONX1/WHIPPET IS MY BUSHING, RABBITING AND RATTING DOG, THE BEST LURCHER FOR ME IS A 1ST CROSS WORKING HILL COLLIEXGREYHOUND, jeff

FLO IS NEARLY 3YEARS, I GOT HER WHEN SHE WAS 16MONTH SHE WAS ON HER WAY TO A LOCAL CATTLE MARKET TO BE SOLD, SHE HAS TURNED OUT A SMASHING BITCH FOR WORKING AND HAS A FEW LURCHER CHAMPS BEHIND HER jeff

I wish that deerhounds did still come in that colour. I'm not surprised that she's done well in the ring. Good that people still work and show their dogs. Long may that continue.
