Hi everyone what sports does everyone do with there whippets? If & When i get a whippet i wouldn't doing agility and flyball but i'm not sure how a whippet would go with these type of sports. I know my Shelley my golden retriever would be hopeless she has sown no signs of liking obstacles eg see saws,jumping etc. My old boy does as he loves to play on childrens play equiment eg runing up stairs down the slide and likes to jump, But his too old now he is 10 years old. Shelley will only jump if Einstein jumps. She has hardly no interest in retrieving toys she will chase and bring back a toy 3 times and thats it. Shelley didn't have much human contact when with the breeder so i think thats where the problem lies.

Well back to whippet things so who here does agility or flyball with there whippet? if so how does your whippet go doing it? Agility & Flyball is just something fun for myself and dog not like i want to be a proffesional at it like go to contest what not. Just some fun to be had by us. If good at it thats great if not well at least we tryed it. What worries me if i do agility with a whippet where he will need to jump will teach him to jump and he may jump fences cause he knows how to jump.My dad said Whippets are known to jump 6ft fences, But my dad said what kept one of his dogs stop jumping was put wire on angle pointing intowards his yard. Any information on agility and flyball with whippets would be great.

My whippet Rocky does flyball and both he and I love it. We are members of the Hampshire Harriers and go to practise once a week and train for competitions.

My older dog Jed, who has sadly left us now was brilliant and didn't need much training but Rocky is inclined to get a bit excited and needs to calm down.

Both were racing whippets also so it was a different sport.

Whippets are fast and love jumping and retrieving the ball. Neither of mine have been inclined to jump out of the garden, even after cats. Just show Rocky the ball now and he looks for a avenue of jumps to go up.

Flyball is such fun and you can see the results of your training and it has so much togetherness as it is a team event. I have raced whippets for over 40 years and enjoy flyball so much more.

My whippet Daisy does agility and she loves it, she is hampered by me and my dodgy handling but we both have a good time :thumbsup: Daisy has also had a go at flyball but didn't like the tennis balls that 'other' dogs had touched :- " then she got attacked by another dog and didn't want to go anymore at all so we gave it up Daisy races as well and really loves that, what she lacks in speed she makes up in enthusiasm :lol: Daisy also enjoys lure coursing. (cant say that Daisy has attempted any other jumping, only the pup has cleared the stairgate, Daisy has never tried (w00t) )

My pup Dexter will try agility, racing and lure coursing as soon as he is old enough :huggles:

Poor little Morrissey whippet only does racing :unsure:

My Kerri loved the FLY bit but wasn't too keen on the BALL :b

Blaze on the other hand loved the BALL but decided she wouldn't FLY as it was much quicker to run around the side

All in the name of good fun though

They sure can

I don't think you need to worry, the jumps are not very high compared to most fences and I don't believe they will associate the jumps with the fence. Also you are teaching your dog to only jump on your command (or during that activity)

I believe a Whippet will jump or climb a fence if it wants to enough. Most don't need to be taught that.

We go "Tracking" with our two. You might like to consider giving it a go if there is a group in your area. Tracking is associated with Agility and Dog Obedience Clubs in Australia, don't know about the UK. if that's where you're from.

The Dogs just love it because it is the one activity they can do where they are the boss. (only once the harness goes on and they are "Tracking" on the field that is)

It increases and enriches the bond between the Handler and their Dog (as does Agility).
