What to feed my poochon 8 week pup?

Hi all,

Becoming pup "parents" for our first time in 2 weeks when we'll collect our 8 week poochon puppy and wondered if I could get some advice on what to feed her.

A lot of the YouTube videos I've been watching on the subject seem to have an affiliation angle which I am finding difficult to look past.

The breeder hasn't been super forthcoming in the pup's menu in her 8 weeks of existence, but has remarked that they're feeding her cooked chicken and yoghurt. We baulked at this, but maybe it's not so bad.

In any case, given this news, how is it advises we proceed, from collection day?

Our budget would cover the "real food" brands who prepare and send "meal plans", but we do acknowledge the benefits on kibble.

Where do we begin?

That's not a balanced diet they are feeding, so while our normal advice would be to feed the same as the breeder for a few weeks to reduce the amount of change the puppy has to cope with all at once, in this case I think you need to get the pup on to a high quality puppy food as soon as possible.

It is an independent dog food comparison website which scores all types of foods (dry, raw, wet) out of 100. The website will automatically show the foods listed in order of what the assessors believe is best quality, and it also will show daily feeding cost (calculated from your dog's age and weight) so you can see what gives you best value for money. It has its limitations but it's a decent place to start.

When we bought our last puppy at 8 weeks of age she was on some sort of kibble with very soft and smelly poos.
I changed her onto a raw diet within 2 days, her poos became firm and with far less smell. And no tummy upsets.
It is possible to purchase "complete" raw diets, it is not dangerous to either ourselves or or dogs/puppies.(just take normal cleanliness precautions as you would with our own raw meats)
Raw is much easier for a dogs stomach to digest than corn based kibbles and far more natural.
Maybe you have the time to purchase a nice little book "Honeys Natural Feeding Handbook for Dogs" before you get your puppy. It helps tremendously with the understanding of the raw product and is easy to understand. Purchase from Ebay or Amazon for a couple of £, these are used but as good as new.
I have fed the raw product for forty years and reared puppies on it too, it is extremely easy these days.

"Natures Menu", is always a good place to start.
You can find their products in most good pet stores with a freezer. Pets at home keep a good supply.
There are lots of other companies that sell raw pet mince and products online.
Just Google Raw pet Mince.
I rather like the "Durham" minces at the moment, they are nice and coarse and not a mushy paste!
