Can someone please tell me the difference between lurchers, long dogs and running dogs? Are they all terms for the same type of dog, or terms for different crosses? Pemba thanks you in advance!

I have always understood that Running dogs is the term given to cover all sight hounds, a Lurcher is a cross between a sight hound, (running dog), and something else commonly a collie or a bedlington. And finally a Long Dog is a cross between two sight hounds eg a Greyhound crossed with a Saluki. Also of course Running dogs covers Lurchers and Long dogs.

I think that many people use them as crossing colloquial terms too, so please don't expect anybody using the terms to be meaning them in any strict definition. To many non-sighthound people, running dog= long dog= any long and leggy slim dog.

I know one very interesting dog that is officially a lurcher but doesn't even look like a sight hound BTW- he's a whippet x staff and is almost as wide as he is tall.

Also as a sight hound fan I would add that no matter what you call them they are fantastic dogs.
