I have a ten yr old female jack Russell called Gemma. She's a lovely, friendly, happy dog, who's always running around, digging holes, wagging her tail and very affectionate. Normal days consist of her jumping up on me, jumping on the chairs to look out the windows, and racing up and down the garden to see the neighbours. She's happy eough to race up and down the stairs when she wants to, usually to look out of one of the upstairs window. Overall, she's as happy and healthy as can be.

Until three days ago. Something's wrong. She looks unhappy, is slow at moving, has her ears and tail down most of the time. She doesn;t jump up anymore, she just waits for me to pick her up. She seems to have increasing trouble and now wont jump up on her favouitre 'viewing table by the window' or go up or down the stairs by herself. If I pick her up she 'sighs' uncomfortably.

She hasn't been crying, but just looking extremely miserable. Possiouple more things, but it may just be me worrying and reading things in where they aren;t there. She seems to be drinking more, and her stomach area seems a tad bigger than normal, but it might just be me being paranoid. She's doing more gas than normal too over the past cou0ple of days.

I'm seriously worried. She's never once really been ill, and I can;t afford vet fees, and the PDSA won;t help me because their eligibility criteria doesn;t fit me, as I'm one of the people out of work who's also had their benefits cut off by the evil government we have at the moment.

I'm hoping it's something that'll pass and she'll get better.

Thanks for any help on what might be wrong, and anything I can do.

addition-

I've noticed that around her anus, which is usually pink, has turned a dark red-black colour. she isn't fussing with it, but today she does seem to be pooing more than normal, and some have been a bit runny :(

Possible anal gland trouble, now im sorry for your money issues we all have them but as a dog owner you have a duty to care for your dog that may need a vet, drinking more isnt a good sign nor is a stomach thats swollen, try to find the money if you can, all the best.

If that was my dog I would get it to vets ASAP,it's the right thing to do.

vet thinks she has a nasty tummy bug. she was pooing a lot again last night. anal glands were fine. still not sure

Well done for seeking advise from the vet, keep us updated and i hope your dog is ok...

Couple of things get her to the vet. Any vet worth his salts will treat the dog first and agree repayment plans with you. Secondly - the money issue. Government cannot suspend all your benefits - you must be entitled to some basics either JSA ESA or PIP. Even if you aren't claiming these at present you are still entitled to Housing Benefit (i work in social housing so i know this to be true. )get to step change or the money advice centre or contact your housing provider if you are in social housing as they can offer you assistance appealing your current suspension.

BTW My dog had anal gland abscess which burst they can be extremely painful so she needs some pain relief and anti biotics at the very least.
