hi all, wondering if anyone has any ideas please, my boy is 6 years old and a cavalier cross jr. last xmas he had troulbe jumping on furniture, wasn't himself and yelped twice when he layed down and was picked up, took him to vet and she couldn't find anything wrong after an examination, she said just stop him from jumping and that was that, after a week and half he was fine again. about 4 days ago i took him on his first holiday in a caravan. after 2 days he started not being himself, seemed 'down' but hen he got funny with the caravan steps and was hesitating to jump on the sofa, then came the yelps when he had thee slightest movement on the bed and being picked up. i stuck with holiday for 2 more days and constantly picking him up when he wanted to go out. by his time enough was enough and cut the holiday short and went home, yesterday he was getting worse, taking a few short steps and laying down and another yelp later i was on the phone to vet and they said they would call back, so he was on the sofa, the phone rang and it was in the other room, i forgot he was on the sofa and ran out of room as i knew it was vet and he legged it off sofa and gave an almighty yelp and cried and struggled to walk for a few seconds, then he came in the hallway and was crying, he yelped when he moved in car and cried. at vet she checked him and his legs, watch him walk and all that and couldn't find anything wrong, she gave us some tablets, Carprieve for 7 days and then if no improvement have an xray. he came home fine, had a treat in the car and another treat at home, walked ok. at night he had his tablet, he couldn't get comfy and gave a little yelp when layed down. this morning he isn't good, he walks a few steps then lays down and lays down and does not move for a long time, he's had a little treat but was laying on his side and ate it. throughout all of this he has not lost his appetite, drinking fine, weeing, poos fine? what should i do, do i give it the rest of the day or a couple of days to let the tablets kick in?

im sure its his back, but what do any of you think? would really appreciate any ideas at all, sorry its so long but had to detail it.

also, as he lays on his side he is lifting his back leg in the air, he tries to pu this leg down but he puts it straight back up again

I think that you do need x-rays to find out what is going on. The last bit of your post about when he is lying down made me think his hip may be involved. I think 3 days would be long enough to wait to see an improvement. Don't be afraid to consult a different vet if you feel you are not being listened to.

Yes, you could ask for a referral to a specialist if your vet is unable to diagnose what is wrong. Do consider. once you have a diagnosis, getting an ACPAT physiotherapist to treat your dog. Some injuries leave a lasting problem that could be helped with physiotherapy or hydrotherapy.

It does sound a lot like there is something happening with his back. I would get a referral to a specialist vet so they can investigate and find out what is happening with him and take X-rays.

Once you have the diagnosis, it's definitely also worth getting a qualified physiotherapist to go through him as well to treat the actual diagnosis and any compensatory issues. The three main organizations within UK are:
