We started in the late 90's with 2 pet whippets called polly and ziggy who are still with us. we joined the welsh club who ran at the local greyhuond track at ystrad mynach, got our 1st ped cassie (conway lady) from jean goode and was lucky to get a good dog to learn the ropes with.

now we can't imagine the house not full of whippets. :huggles:

We started in 2003 with a show-bred boy who was meant to be a pet. He enjoyed the racing so much, that we decided to get a racing bred dog and become more involved. Les and Mark Shearing provided us with our darling boy, Fynn, (Magical Mayhem), who has proved to be a faulous and tenacious little racer. He is a wonderful companion and pet too, and I can't imagine life without him. We got our original show-bred(Magical Mistery) cleared at West Somerset for straight racing and followed last year in qualifying him for bends at Worcester (Thanks, both clubs).

We so enjoy spending time with friends at our local club, Gloucester through the winter months, and it has become a huge social affair for us and the dogs. Winning isn't important, my show-bred rarely beats another dog, but he is honest and schools puppies at the club, we just love the friends and the company :huggles:

Len and I started racing in the late 1970's at Oxford with Backchat which we bought off Pete Spokes later she was joined by Pity Me, who we mainly raced at Wokingham's night track. We didn't really start open racing untill 1985 when we bought On a Promise. My first love has always been the night racing scene and two of my best memories are of Pity Me winning the Wokingham Veteran derby the same night as Ernie and Chris Ruffles little star Touch of Gold won the main Derby and of my queen of night racing Only Joking winning the St Ledger at Wokingham in the 1990's, she was a character refusing to run on a Sunday but turn on the floodlight and she was a nice little earner as the saying goes. I know many of us miss the night racing as it was a lot of fun and much more of a social event such a shame it is lost to us now.

Missed out the best bit Sue - the pre race moan at Roy about grading - he was always right about your chance, made you look a bit of a fool sometimes.

I had one of those BBQ sets along with a very nice Whisky decanter which unfortunately isn't full at the moment.

Dave & I started Whippet Racing in 1969.

Mr & Mrs Frances of the Francescan Whippets took us to Brayswood and Pitsea Clubs

Daves brother in law was racing at the time we wanted a dog. Dave had had a whippet prevuiosly from the Gypsys so that was what we went for.

Mr Frances took us to Mrs Mckays Kennals & we bought our 1st whippet, Mrs Frances named her Tansey & her racing name was Reluctant Lass , as she was very reluctant to race.

When she won her 1st race at Stevenage Whippet Racing Club the whole club cheered

We bread with her with Mr & Mrs Frances dog Charlie & produced WRCh Hideaway . This 16lb bitch done most of her racing with the No Pedigree's and was the 1st dog to win all four WCRA Championships in one year being 1974. She had 5 Championship wins in all the 1st being in 1972

We have always bread our own dogs and even our latest Satin Sundown is from our home bread Satin Spirit who is now 101/2yrs old

this really does make me feel like a novice, :- "

I started racing at the same time as Nigel and Judy with 2 show/coursing dogs. Sax kept on growing and didn't stop til he was 23 inches at the shoulder and 34-35lb when skinny! I did race Flute though, as Prussian Night Flight. Used to be delighted if we got better than 4th in the cons. He won so many trophies without beating another dog. But they were all taken home and cherished. First racing dog was Xcel bred by Alf and Enid Hayes out of their good bitch Hi de Hi by Melrose Goodlad. Since then we have had Xcess, Xcite,Xcalibur and Xile. We hope our new addition will bring as much fun racing and socialising at Glos, racing as Xplicit.
