is it possible that "billy" will suffer any problems because he is on his own?..i suppose they must learn quite a lot from their littermates normally??? or do they learn the most important things from their mum?he is gorgeous btw

I think Dawn and Karen are in a better position to answer that cos I've never had a singleton before but I think the most obvious thing they will lack is playmates.

IMO they tend to get spoiled a lot (50p was also rejected by his mum so was totally hand reared). They seem to have more interaction with humans regarding playing. 50p is frightened of nothing and sometimes thinks he is human, he still plays the same games with me that i used to play with him as a baby only now he is just a tad rougher (w00t) .

I dont think he has lost out in anyway at all.

I've missed a thread somewhere obviously but pleased to see a healthy pup and Mum. Little Billy looks lovely  looking forward to seeing more photos of the 'litter' :D

very interesting...yes i suppose it is not disimilar to human babies having siblings or not to play with...different... but not a question of better or worse

Polly was hand reared also.

She tends to want to play with me instead of the other dogs as Dawn says.

I guess she has been a bit spoilt and most definatly has NO idea shes a dog.

She has no telling off responses, you could scream in her ear and she does not bat an eyelid. But she never runs off or even looks at stuff to chase (because shes a human trapped in a dogs body (w00t) )

I feel a bit mean because she only had two pairs of rolled up socks in the nest, no teddies, mind you most of us know what happened to them :x

My thoughts exactly Karen 50p looks at you as if to say "up yours!" :- "

Even when the girls were in season he thought it was all a big game. They would flirt outrageously with him and he would just nip there bums and run off for them to chase him!! Until he hit 13months and he discovered what the little thing between his legs was really for and then everything in sight got humped!! (w00t) (w00t) (w00t)

He's gorgeous  Are you sure you're not going to keep him? :D

Yep! At least Aimee is feeding him so I haven't got the hassle of hand rearing him! Growing at the rate of knots, weighs in a 1lb today!

A question.....

Do you think mum knows she had more babies or do they just get one and look after the ones that are there and not really care.

I mean if you took all of them away at birth, she would know they were missing but if you took all but left one would she know that there should be more iykwim

He's just lovely Dessie

Hmmmmm ........ dogs, like most animals, don't have conscious thought so it is a yes and no answer!

When they were being born she knew she had two puppies, because I put them in a box whilst she was having contractions and tramping around and, once she had settled, I gave her the boy we have got back to suckle but she knew there was another one in the box still and was not happy until she had him back as well.

However, when we went to the Vet, I left the little one who put was pts there with the one that was DOA and so only took the pup we have back home with her and she has showed no signs of looking for the others so I don't think she is missing them, per se.

Aah, poor babies, what was wrong with the little one? :( Did I miss that somewhere else?

Such a cutie!!  And soooo small!! :*

animals are much more aware than we think sometimes...if they can sense thunder and seizures and sniff out cancer then we have a lot to learn

we never used to pts animals in the same room...

and many owners used to take their dead pets home with them to spend the night with their other pets before burial/cremation :(

 Arrrrrrrr ! He's looking so sweet ......... you wait till he gets the teddy I got him

When we had our Hazel pts last year it was done at our house and our cats were there, it seemed to help both Hazel and the cats. They looked for her for ages after the vet took her away for cremation. I don't know if they remember her now though.
