Hi, We are lucky enough to have a nice big garden, and be surrounded by woodland & fields.

I have a wife and daughter (one of 3) that are both desperate to introduce a dog to the family - and it would do me good :D

After discussing this for at least two years now, it seems that a Whippet Cross is the direction that we would like to go in (stunning short haired medium sized loving dog that likes a good walk 3 times a day).

My trouble is - where do I start?

We would like a bitch pup, but we're not sure where to go.

We live in Kent, and to be honest, I may struggle to pay £400.00 upwards (I hope that doesn't sound bad, but the other costs are going to be over that, and as much as we can cover the monthly costs, the initial buy might be tight).

Can anybody point me in the right direction as to where to find a good trainable pup that would be happy to share her life with kids?

Thanks :)

Welcome to K9! I also live in Kent and I got my dog Polly, from a breeder who has a sister who has whippet kennels. He only had one lovely bitch and unfortunately she had an accident last year, so he isn't going to breed from her again - sorry I can't be more helpful but I'm sure there are others on here who will be able to help.

Whippies are wonderful dogs and you'll have loads of fun with one, but beware - they come with an in-built devil whippet in each puppy!! Also, one is never enough!!

Have you contacted any local rescues at all there are both whippet, sighthound and lurcher charities accross the country. I help with Lurcherlink and we have links to many of them on the site. You have a made a good start though my introducing yourself here and being honest. Something (having just joined) that I have noticed the very friendly people here appreciate.

Wow, thanks for the responses :)

I've had a good look around the links now, and we certainly have a clearer picture of what owning a whippet / lurcher will involve (thanks Doris).

Had a look at Lurcherlink too. We had tried a couple of rescue places, but many of the dogs would not be happy with kids - and of'course - I've kind of promised a pup :b

What we have learnt is;

We're definitely going down the right route.

A lurcher pup would be great (especially a collie cross).

The 2 years consideration of what we are getting into is essential.

There is clearly a great bunch of folk involved.

Keeping my eyes & ears open

Mick
