Hi everyone - My lovely Otis is one on Tuesday - I can't believe how time has flown - I will post some birthday pictures later on this week :- )

It is cold and chilly here and Otis has an array of coats which when he is out and about manages to piddle on as he still doesn't cock his leg.

I see from the lovely designs that are available over there too that they have tummy straps/belts - my coats are very similar I have even shortend some of the belts so they sit more on his chest and he still manages to wee on them...

How long does it take for whips generally to get the idea that he doesnt have to pee all over his lovely jackets!

Or does his wardrobe just expand to a new jacket for every day!! *grin*

My boys range in age from 7 months to 9 years. To be honest none of them cock their legs all the time although Owen and Bandit do it mostly including up me which they do sometimes at shows when we first arrive .I don't know why but they do it regulary and I can be seen dancing round when they first get out of the car to keep out of their way.

Simba and Archie 14months and 7 months have yet to start cocking their legs but Archie's dad Danny was cocking his leg at 8 weeks old.

My Sweep started cocking his leg at 8 weeks old, and always without fail cocks his leg now, and never wees his chest or legs. His son Smidge cocks his leg when we are out, but at home always squats, and 9 times out of ten he starts to get up before he's properly finished, and its up his chest and legs - I keep wet wipes handy, and he gets the once over if I see him dripping!! If I miss it, the girls clean him up when he comes in!! He is 2 now, so I've given up hoping he will grow up and do it properly all of the time!! Like you say it is a nuisance when it comes the time for wearing coats

I was wondering if having a dog neutered affects the instinct to lift a leg.

My last dog Peat lifted fine but still peed on his leg!

I definitely read somewhere that if a dog hasn't learned to cock his leg before neutering then he probably never will. I just can't remember where I read it - and it was only last week - must be losing my mind!!! :b

Mathew does both, he's 6months old. Generally he squats when at home (in the garden not the house!!) and cocks his leg when out. He also has a sprinkler effect though whereby he pees all up his legs and over his feet! Also not looking forward to coat season..

Oh, he sometimes pees on the little dogs as well if they are all sniffing the same thing!! :lol:

My Merlin is 3.5 and in the year I've had him he has more often than not squatted for a pee - if there is a really interesting smell on a vertical surface he will lift his leg, but if there is no tree or whatever in sight he will squat and water the grass (and his front legs!).

Finn cocks his leg (he's almost 2 and has done so for over a year now), but always stands so close to the post/fence/whatever that he's weeing on that the wee splashs back on his flank. He can also wee on his front legs even when he's cocked a leg. Tyg is 10 1/2 mths and rarely cocks his leg and mostly doesn't wee anywhere except the ground.
