Today we lost our little darling Jenna, she was put to sleep this evening, to save her suffering. She would have been 16 years old in February, but didn’t quite make it.

Jenna was homebred from our bitch Whiphaven Bambi, and her sire was Baldrey Black Diamond. We decided to keep Lucy from the litter as soon as she was born, as she was a nice golden fawn. Soon after their eyes opened, Jenna’s little personality came to the fore. I would hold her in my hands and speak to her, and she would listen intently and had the most mesmerising eyes. I told Steve I was getting attached to her, and he said “well why don’t you keep her too?” I didn’t need telling twice, and so she stayed. This picture shows Jenna in bed with her sister Lucy left front. Jenna is the one peeking out - the head without a body! Her other sisters are Minnie (left back), Flash front right, and Fern standing.

We took Jenna and Lucy to some shows, but they hated it, and would put the brakes on and not move round the ring! We decided to take them racing instead, and they loved it! They were like different dogs, and would leap up and down screaming when taken to the track. We raced them at club level during 1994, and in 1995 we had them passported. They both started racing at 22lbs, but once we got used to seeing the dogs at racing weight, they raced at 19 and 20lbs! Lucy and Jenna were two of the slowest dogs, but Jenna did manage to win a Consolation final at Linton, and we were so proud. She also came 2nd on the bend at an inter-club event between the Northern and Scotland – it was the first time she had ever run a bend.

Jenna enjoyed her racing, and low and behold, she managed to get an entry in her passport in 1999 at the Championships at Uttoxeter. She was running in the veterans, and was in a 3 dog semi – she came 3rd so would have gone out, but the dog in 2nd place was disqualified, so Jenna got her place in the final, and managed a 3rd (I have a feeling there were only 3 runners though!).

Jenna and Lucy would fall out often, but for the most part they were inseparable, and always slept curled together.

Lucy died from a long illness in February 2000, a few days before her 7th birthday.

Jenna was always known at home as Gentle Jenna, and whenever we brought home a new pup, she would always take them under her wing.

We will miss her dearly, but we are happy that she had a long and happy life, and when she fell asleep with her head in my hands this evening, I felt relief that her end was a timely, peaceful and pain free one. Go with love my darling girl x
