Once the surgery is over -- and it is not a lengthy procedure -- my vet tells me he finishes a spay in 12 to 15 minutes under anaaethetic -- your dog will either be kept by the vet overnight and released the next morning (the way my vet does it) or released to you that evening with some basic requirements you must follow. Your dog has had an abdominal operation so you will need to keep her calm and quiet for the next 10 days to two weeks so as the surgery heals well. This means you should not let her jump up on beds, race around the yard, play roughly with other dogs etc. Keep her quiet and confined if you have other whippets and only let her be with them in the days post op when you are there and can ensure play does not get too rough. For the first few days your girl will just want to spend time resting anyway, so really what you need to do is not send her racing into the woods, running around the yard and roughhousing with other dogs, or straining herself jumping up onto beds and furniture. Pick her up carefully and put her on chairs or beds and stay with her while she is there especially in the first few days. Good luck and don't worry. She shall be fine.

Normally vets give you a care sheet when your dog has had an operation. Other than what has already been said about keeping them quiet my vet also recommends light meals for a day or so. They recommend chicken and rice although they will sell commercially prepared food if required.

I've been looking at this too since Grace will need to be spayed in the next few months. Apart from the excellent advice already given, my vet said it is important not to let them climb the stairs for the first few days. Perhaps get a child-gate at the bottom and carry them up when/if they need to go up. If it is any comfort, I'm very nervous about it too! All the best for your lovely girl :luck: :luck: :luck:

Great advice there ! The only other thing I could add is that one of mine was very unsettled after the operation for quite a few hours . I know she had painkillers so I think it was just a bit of reaction to the anaesthetic . She was the only one though all the others just came home and slept .

One of mine has had two general anaesthetics. The first time she was extremely slow to recover so on the next occasion the vet used a different induction agent and she was much brighter.

It's worth asking your vet which one they use, as whippets tend to be more sensitive than most other dogs. The one which suited Jinny best is propofol

I'm sure your little girl will be just fine, if a little sore and sleepy afterwards! :luck: :luck:

we had Flo speyed on the 1st December, when she came home she cried all afternoon and evening.....but i know she was'nt in pain as she had had a pain killer injection at the vets...tbh i dont think she knew she was making all that noise   as she was so sleepy -_- -_-

the next morning she was fine, she never once messed about with her stitches, and took her medication no probs.

now shes like a different dog....i think the body change before/after and during seasons really dragged her down  but its like she has a new lease on life

im sure your girl will be just fine :luck:

mine have all been whingey and unsettled after a GA but i think its the effects of the drugs more than actual pain. take it gently and she will be fine ...good luck xx
