I have just joined and am still learning my way round on the system. I lost my Whippet/Greyhound (Megan) to cancer in March only 9 yrs old, she was the most loving beautiful dog around she was my favourite girl. I still miss her, i am now thinking of getting a Whippet, having had the x breed i have some ideas how whippets tick, the only question i cannot find an answer to is will they walk on the lead for a good few miles. My hubby loves to walk the dogs my other dog is a Bedlingtonx Whippet who will walk forever. Also i would have to look at a girly Whippet as the Bedlington x Whippet (Jake) is very dominant, would the Whippet nature stand for this? Any help would be great.

firtly welcome to k9 love, im very sorry to hear of ur loss.

i dont have a whippet yet but im sure the great girls and boys on this site will have bucket loads of advice for u, on the walking front yeah they will walk the legs off u (w00t)

Hi Debsy, and welcome :huggles: Sorry to hear of your loss - you will find lots of people on here understand what you've gone through, and I'm glad you found us like minded people. I think a girlie whippet sounds like a good idea, although they can also be dominant - maybe if you go for the least forward in the litter, you will find she is happy to be dominated. Girls normally work out a way to get round the males anyway  well we do too, don't we girls?

Good luck in finding the right friend for Jake - I think you'd be going the right way in getting a bitch rather than another dog

So sorry for your sad loss, they leave huge gaps in our lives... :( :huggles:

I hope you go on to find the perfect addition for your family, you wont go far wrong with a whippet... :huggles: Good luck... :luck:

I went eight months without a dog after losing my whippet Chip in 2004, he was 12 and a half when he went to the Bridge

....and now I have 3 of them... :)

:( So sorry for your loss. :( R.I.P Megan, Run Free. :huggles:

Our whippet Jesse has cancer too :( even after amputation and chemo the cancer is still spreading fast, :( he too is only 9 years old.

As for advice all I can say is you are choosing the right breed if you get a whippet.

 :huggles:

:luck: :luck: with whatever you choose.

In answer to your other question debsy. We often walk ours for 3 or 4 miles in one go and they have no problem with it.

Am so sorry poor Jesse is it osteosarcoma Megans was in the front left shoulder bone and grew rapidly, its something i never heard of until my meggie got it the vet said she had only seen it in large dogs ie Labs etc. Its so evil cancer and i was so angry heres hoping for Jesse...thanks for the advice

All of our dogs love to walk for miles and miles - they will go as far as you want

I'm not sure what to advise with regards to the dog/bitch - as almost always the bitch will be the top dog in a mixed pack.

Yes Jesse's was osteosarcoma in his hind leg, they amputated last September and he had 6 sessions of chemotherapy, but the cancer returned in his lungs and now in his

lymph glands. :( :( It is heart breaking isn't it ? I will pm you later

Hi there Welcome to the forum - I' sorry about you losing your girl Megan so young :(

I have a twelve month old whippet bitch - who is the most wonderful animal in the world, we walk several miles a day, between 3 and 5 and she happily walked on lead on the canal for about 10 miles a few weeks back - so you see - they are perfect

Sorry for your loss

I lost a whippet to osteosarcoma about 3 years ago, he was only 10, it was his front leg also :(

We are now owned by 2 young whippets one male one female, who will walk for miles or crash on the sofa they dont mind which :huggles:

:luck:

So sorry to hear of your loss - it absolutely breaks your heart to lose them, doesn't it! :( :huggles:

We've had our whippet Tina (18 months old now) eight weeks tomorrow and words just can't express how much she means to both me and Neil  We are now both completely obsessed with whippets and plan to get Tina a wee sister/brother next year as one whippet just ain't enough! :- " In fact, we were discussing how soon we could get another one just two WEEKS after we bought her

I asked this self same question about exercise just a few weeks ago too as we both enjoy walking in the Lake District and all the gorgeous Northumbrian countryside around where we live and EVERYBODY assured me that whippets can take as much exercise as you throw at them....but are equally happy with a shorter walk on days when you are a tad busy :) I've certainly found this 100% true with my girl

We take Tina to the nearby beach almost every day and she'll charge around like a loony (you HAVE to watch a whippet run...there's no other breed so graceful!) and play with her ball-on-a-rope for ages and then crash out fast asleep in the car going home

I cannot recommend the breed enough    You certainly won't EVER regret getting one........or two or three :- " :huggles:
